When he inquires if anyone has ever lost too much or regretted it the next day, they all laugh – but that doesn’t stop them from continuing their betting habits.
This scenario is not uncommon, according to Micallef. He notes that young men make up nine out of 10 sports betters in Australia, contributing to a staggering $50 billion in annual gambling activity. Research suggests that men often believe they have control over the outcome of a sport because they feel they know more about it. However, this belief rarely translates into winning, raising the question: why do they keep coming back?
Micallef acknowledges the social benefits of gambling, stating that he doesn’t view it as immoral. However, he finds it puzzling why people continue to gamble despite losing. “I can absolutely see the social utility in it,” he says, “but why people persist with it when they lose is the baffling thing to me.”
