Jack Ginnivan’s Transformation and Hawthorn’s Premiership Ambitions
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has highlighted the remarkable transformation of Jack Ginnivan, who has evolved from a player known for his “shrugging lairiser” tendencies to becoming a vital component of the Hawks’ premiership aspirations. Ginnivan, along with dynamic forward Connor Macdonald, will reach a significant milestone in their AFL careers when they step onto the MCG to face Melbourne on Saturday. This match will mark their 100th appearances for the club.
Macdonald is set to become the first player to achieve this feat under Mitchell’s coaching, showcasing the impact of his leadership and development strategies. The 23-year-old Ginnivan, who previously played 42 games for Collingwood, made the switch to Hawthorn following the Magpies’ 2023 grand final victory. Early in his career, Ginnivan was more recognized for his tendency to duck tackles to win free kicks and for some questionable off-field decisions. However, Mitchell believes that Ginnivan has matured significantly and is now earning respect through his consistent performances on the field.
“He’s really important to the way we play,” Mitchell said on Friday. “One of the pieces of the puzzle we can move around into different positions and is happy to do whatever is needed. He’s much more than shrugging lairiser now, he’s a very well-rounded player who can perform on most days.”

Key Challenges Ahead for Hawthorn
Hawthorn faces a tough challenge against Melbourne, a team currently riding a scintillating winning streak at the MCG. The Hawks will be without star veteran Jack Gunston and key defender Tom Barrass, which presents an opportunity for other players to step up. Mitchell expressed hope that Gunston, who recently scored six goals against Fremantle, will be fit for the upcoming clash against Adelaide next Thursday night.
“Jack’s been quite pivotal for us in the past 18 months,” Mitchell said. “He won’t play forever, so we do need to find other avenues to goal, which I think we have done, and we’ve been able to put up some good scores without him at different times.”

Hawthorn’s Current Form and Melbourne’s Strong Performance
Despite sitting fourth on the ladder, Hawthorn recently followed up a draw against Collingwood with a defeat to Fremantle last week. This result highlights the challenges the team faces in maintaining consistency throughout the season. On the other hand, Melbourne has emerged as a surprise packet this season, securing six wins out of nine games. The Demons have managed to win five consecutive matches at the MCG, including victories over strong contenders like Brisbane and Gold Coast.
For this crucial encounter, Daniel Turner and Trent Rivers have been recalled to the squad, while Caleb Windsor is sidelined due to a toe injury. This reshuffling of the team provides an opportunity for new players to showcase their abilities and contribute to the team’s success.
