Sam Kerr’s Chelsea chapter ends: ‘Grateful to have played for this club’

Sam Kerr’s Journey at Chelsea Comes to an End

After six and a half years of remarkable contributions, it is official that Sam Kerr will leave Chelsea at the end of the season. This marks the conclusion of one of the most successful and trophy-filled careers in Women’s Super League (WSL) football. The English club announced on Thursday (Friday, AEST) that the Matildas captain will depart when her contract expires in the summer, with her final game for the Blues set to be an emotional match against Manchester United this weekend.

“Obviously, there’s a little bit of sadness,” Kerr said as she announced her departure. “It’s leaving Chelsea, leaving the club where I’ve been for so long, leaving my teammates, leaving the fans. But when I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time, I just feel happy. Happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years and won as many trophies as we could. The only thing that comes to my mind is remembering all the happy moments, the fun moments, and just feeling really proud.”

The decision had been widely expected, with the 32-year-old reportedly signing with the ambitious NWSL franchise Denver Summit in the US last month. However, Kerr will end her time at Chelsea as the club’s all-time leading league scorer with 64 WSL goals, while her 115 strikes in all competitions place her just one behind Fran Kirby as the Blues’ all-time leading goal scorer.

There is still a chance for a fairytale ending to her reign as the ‘Queen of Kingsmeadow’ if Kerr can surpass Kirby’s record with a double in her final match against the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge.

Kerr’s individual and team success went hand-in-hand during her time at Chelsea. She was twice the WSL’s Golden Boot winner as the leading scorer and was voted second in the Ballon d’Or as the world’s top women’s player in 2023.

Despite the highs, there were also challenging moments. One such instance was when Kerr was charged with racially aggravated harassment against a police officer following an incident in London in 2023. She was found not guilty 13 months later after a high-profile trial.

Kerr also faced a significant setback when she was sidelined for 20 months after sustaining a knee ligament injury in January 2024. However, her resilience shone through as she returned this season to score her 100th Chelsea goal. Even though it took time to fully recover her fitness, she still ended the season as the top scorer with 16 goals in 29 matches.

Her recent form has shown glimpses of Kerr at her peak, leading to suggestions that Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor should do everything possible to keep her in the squad. However, the Blues have been strongly linked with Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw, who has taken over as the deadliest striker in the WSL.

Kerr is married to American international Kristie Mewis, and the couple has a baby son named Jagger. It is expected that she will now announce her return to the US, where she was previously the all-time leading scorer in the NWSL.

Chelsea paid tribute to Kerr, stating: “We thank Sam for her incredible contribution to our success on the pitch and sustained growth off it.”
