Western Bulldogs Assistant Coach Expresses Interest in Carlton Role
Western Bulldogs assistant coach Daniel Pratt has publicly expressed his interest in the vacant senior coaching position at Carlton. This comes after Michael Voss, the previous head coach, submitted his resignation earlier in the week, prompting the Blues to begin their search for a new leader.
Pratt confirmed his intent to apply for the role during an interview on SEN, stating, “I’m interested in taking my coaching as far as I can which would be in that type of role.” However, he emphasized that his immediate focus remains on the current season, noting that it is still early in the year.
“I’ve been really fortunate actually, I’ve been able to work at a lot of clubs that have had premiership success,” Pratt added. “I was able to do that with Bevo at Hawthorn years ago and the loyalty to him is why I came back to the Bulldogs. So I’ll continue that loyalty.”
Pratt also mentioned that while the opportunity is appealing, he is not rushing into any decisions. “I’m sure at some point there’ll be some conversations and I’m happy to talk about that when that happens.”
Coaching Career and Background
Daniel Pratt’s journey in the AFL coaching ranks began in 2014, following a playing career that spanned North Melbourne and Brisbane. He initially joined West Coast as a development coach, working alongside Kangaroos teammate Adam Simpson.
In 2023, Pratt made a move to the Western Bulldogs, reuniting with Luke Beveridge. The pair had previously worked together at Box Hill before Pratt’s stint at the Eagles. His contributions have not gone unnoticed, as he was named the AFLCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2024.
Beveridge has publicly supported Pratt’s potential for a senior role, along with fellow assistant Brendon Lade. “When you consider Brendon Lade is right up there with doing all the yards. He’s a big friendly giant. He’s as capable and ready as anyone. Pratty is in the boat as well.”
Strong Endorsement from Luke Beveridge
Beveridge praised both assistants, highlighting their readiness for a senior position. “I’d give them glowing references if I was asked the question. It’s a bit like putting your players up for All-Australian selection. You don’t want to put the noses out of joint for the Carlton establishment who are going to pick their coach.”
However, he also acknowledged the challenge ahead. “But if they make the call, I’d definitely be in those guys’ corner. I think they’re ready for an opportunity.”
