Bulldogs Coach Expresses Confidence in Stephen Crichton’s Origin Prospects
Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo has expressed his belief that Stephen Crichton will be selected for the centres in the upcoming State of Origin series, stating he would be “shocked” if the player was overlooked. Ciraldo is backing Crichton to make a strong statement during Magic Round, despite recent reports suggesting that Laurie Daley may opt for a different centre pairing.
Potential Lineup Changes and Player Injuries
Reports have indicated that Daley is leaning towards selecting Latrell Mitchell and Kotoni Staggs as the centre duo, with James Tedesco likely to take the fullback spot over Dylan Edwards. Leading NRL reporter James Hooper revealed that Casey McLean and Brian To’o are expected to be the wingers, leaving no room for Crichton and Edwards in the starting lineup. This has raised concerns about Crichton’s form and fitness, as he has been battling a shoulder injury.
Ciraldo acknowledged that Crichton’s two-week break was not sufficient for his AC joint injury. It is believed that the Bulldogs captain suffered a completely separated shoulder but only missed one game. “He definitely came back earlier than we thought he would and probably should’ve come back,” Ciraldo said. “But that’s ‘Critta’. He’s always thinking about the team first and what he can do for the team. He’s been battling his way through there but he’s starting to get back to the confidence that we know he has.”

When asked about Crichton’s chances of playing in Origin, Ciraldo said: “I’d be shocked (if he was overlooked). He’s been one of NSW’s best for the past number of seasons. When it comes to Origin time, you can rely on those sorts of blokes. He knows what it’s about.”
Crichton’s Upcoming Game and Form
Crichton is set to play his 150th NRL game against Cronulla on Friday night, which will be his final match before teams are selected for the Origin series opener. “The last week or so, he’s started to get some good training in,” Ciraldo said. “I’m confident you’re going to see the best of him.”
Incumbents Set to Be Axed
There are indications that several incumbent players may be excluded from the NSW squad. One theory suggests that the potential team leak to the media might be a strategy to gauge how players like Crichton and Edwards respond. Other players reportedly set to miss out include Jarome Luai, Angus Crichton, Spencer Leniu, Connor Watson, Max King, and Stefano Utoikamanu.
Liam Martin remains sidelined due to a knee injury, while Zac Lomax has moved to rugby union. Daley is reportedly considering Isaah Yeo in the front row, with Cameron Murray starting at lock.
Key Players Likely to Miss Out
- Jarome Luai – Reports suggest he may not be included in the final selection.
- Angus Crichton – The player is also expected to miss out.
- Spencer Leniu – Another key player who could be left out.
- Connor Watson – Has been named as part of the potential lineup but may not make the final cut.
- Max King – Another player who may not be selected.
- Stefano Utoikamanu – Expected to be omitted from the squad.
Injury Concerns and Team Selection
With several key players facing injury or being left out, the focus is now on who will step up to fill the gaps. Ciraldo’s comments highlight the importance of experience and reliability when selecting players for high-stakes matches like State of Origin. As the selection process continues, all eyes will be on Crichton and other players to see if they can prove their worth on the field.
