Michael Carrick Nears Appointment as Manchester United Manager
Michael Carrick is on the verge of being officially appointed as the new manager of Manchester United after reaching a broad agreement with the club. The 44-year-old has been offered a two-year contract, with an option for an additional season, marking a significant step in his career transition from player to manager.
Carrick has emerged as the club’s top choice to replace Ruben Amorim on a permanent basis. Although talks are still ongoing with Carrick and his backroom staff, the appointment could be announced on Sunday when Manchester United face Nottingham Forest.
Carrick, who recently stated that it felt “natural” for him to be United manager after a recent victory over Liverpool, had indicated on Friday that his future was “pretty close” to being settled. His journey to this point has not been straightforward, as he was not initially seen as the favorite to take charge next season when he returned to Old Trafford in January.
However, since then, Manchester United have achieved impressive results, securing 33 points from 15 Premier League games and qualifying for the Champions League. This success has led to Carrick being shortlisted for the division’s manager-of-the-year award.
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has given his approval for Carrick’s potential appointment. This decision comes after Carrick impressed chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox during his four months in an interim role.

Carrick, who was appointed in January on an interim basis, has previously addressed speculation about his future in the role. During pre-match press conferences, he admitted, “I can’t blame you for asking [about my future]. There’s two games to go, apart from that there’s not much else to say, probably what you expect. The situation is pretty clear for us all. Same as in terms of preparing for the game.”
He continued, “It’s a unique football club, a special club. I’m immensely proud to have come back and been a part of it, to help as a supporter and ex-player, as a pure supporter caring about the club so much to be in a position to come back and help and move forward was important. To make a big step, and back in the Champions League is good, we’re happy with the work we’ve done so far.”
