Why brutalist architecture is trending on social media in Australia

The Evolution of Instagram and the Rise of Brutalist Architecture

Instagram has undergone a significant transformation since its launch in 2010. Initially, it was a platform where users shared glimpses of their daily lives, often with an overuse of filters. However, the way people use the app has shifted dramatically. Today, Instagram feeds are dominated by posts showcasing major achievements and vacation moments. This trend has led to a homogenization of content, with many users visiting the same locations and capturing identical photos.

Queues have become common near iconic landmarks such as the blue domes of Oia in Santorini or the Itsukushima Shrine Torii in Japan, as people wait for the perfect shot. In Barcelona, a dedicated selfie zone has been created outside the Sagrada Família to manage the influx of tourists and reduce conflicts with locals.

Despite this trend, there is a growing interest in a style that might not seem immediately appealing: brutalist architecture. These concrete-heavy buildings, which emerged after World War II, are not typically considered aesthetically pleasing. However, they have become a new favorite among travelers, particularly those exploring former socialist countries.

Skopje: A Brutalist Architectural Haven

Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, has become a hotspot for lovers of brutalist architecture. After a devastating earthquake in 1963, which destroyed 80% of the city, architects from around the world contributed to the reconstruction efforts. This resulted in a unique blend of brutalist styles that coexist harmoniously within the city.

Aleksandra Georgieva, a local from Skopje, recently launched a “tip-what-you-can” brutalist architecture walking tour. She wanted to share her passion for the architectural style with tourists. During a recent tour, she explained, “In that period of time, Macedonian architects managed to make a huge contribution to the city. It’s a debatable style of architecture, but whether you like it or not, the city was completely reborn after the earthquake.”

Georgieva’s perspective on the city’s brutalist buildings is clear. While some critics argue for restoring the buildings to a neoclassical look, a project known as Skopje 2014, which aimed to change the façades of these structures, was halted in 2018. Many buildings, including the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia and the Parliament, were already altered at significant cost. The argument is that these changes are not about destruction but rather returning the city to its pre-earthquake appearance.

However, Georgieva believes that the city missed an opportunity to renovate in the neoclassical style immediately after the earthquake. “In the meantime, brutalism became one of the most important styles of architecture in the city,” she said. “It might not be the favorite, but it’s very authentic and typical, and it sets Skopje apart from other cities.”

Her tour includes notable buildings such as the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which draws inspiration from Japanese temples; the City Trade Centre, a vital part of the city’s fabric; and the Post Office’s headquarters, which is truly spectacular for those who appreciate the style.

Other Destinations for Brutalist Architecture Enthusiasts

While Skopje is a standout location for brutalist architecture, there are other cities around the world that also embrace this style. London’s Barbican Centre is one of the most famous examples of brutalist architecture. Visitors can book a 90-minute tour through the performing arts centre’s website.

Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is another popular destination for enthusiasts. The Cascade Complex is a highlight, and a two-hour drive from the city will take visitors to the iconic Orgov Radio-Optical Telescope. Other top cities for embracing the brutalist trend include Belgrade and Paris, each offering unique examples of this architectural style.
