The Complex Impact of Video Games on Society
While video games have become a dominant force in modern entertainment, their real-world influence is far more complex than many might realize. A recent report has brought attention to the challenges in understanding and measuring this impact.
The study, conducted by Opening Knowledge across Research and Entertainment (OKRE) and UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE), highlights that the gaming industry lacks a unified system for accurately measuring data related to usage, influence, and long-term effects. This absence makes it difficult to fully grasp the sector’s broader implications.
“The full impact of the videogames sector is currently not well understood, not just in terms of its economic value, but particularly in relation to its wide-ranging social and cultural influence,” the report states. “As a result, decisions about and within the sector are based on a limited, partial view.”

Current Focus on Financial Metrics
Currently, the impact of video games is primarily assessed from a financial perspective. This approach is beneficial for video game companies and other stakeholders who seek to generate revenue and explore growth opportunities within the sector.
However, this narrow focus makes it challenging to understand how video games affect societal structures. As a result, there remains a gap between policymakers, who are responsible for governance, and investors or other individuals financially involved in the gaming industry.
UKIE serves as a trade body representing the UK video game industry. It frequently collaborates with policymakers and government bodies on issues such as regulation, education, tax relief, and industry growth. Through its UKIE Worldwide initiative, the organization promotes British game studios and businesses internationally via trade missions, partnerships, and major global events.
Bridging the Gap Between Sectors
OKRE, on the other hand, focuses on connecting the entertainment sector with real-world social issues. Its mission is to help researchers, creators, and audiences better understand how media and interactive content can shape society and public understanding.
Although the joint report outlines several concerns, OKRE and UKIE also emphasize the need for progress. They believe that improving the understanding of the gaming industry’s benefits is essential, especially as it continues to grow in significance.
Steps Toward a More Comprehensive Understanding
To achieve this, the two organizations suggest taking several key steps. First, they recommend convening studies, compiling all available industry data, and mapping them against the research frameworks outlined in the report.
Given the fast-paced nature of the video gaming industry, regular updates are crucial. User preferences and popular titles change rapidly, making continuous monitoring necessary.
One of the biggest challenges is the lack of data on the environmental impact of video games. This area should be included in future reports, as initiatives like Playing for People are already working to collect relevant data.
Once all sectors of data are compiled, the next step would be to harmonize economic and social data to create an econometric model. This model could help quantify the value of video games in a more comprehensive way than the current approach allows.
