From Dishes to Superhero: Millie Alcock’s Journey to Stardom
Millie Alcock’s journey from washing dishes in a Sydney restaurant to starring in one of the most anticipated movies of the year is nothing short of inspiring. The Australian actress has now become the face of DC’s upcoming Supergirl film, a role that marks a significant milestone in her career. However, her path to fame was anything but straightforward.
Alcock, who is 26 years old, shared some candid reflections in a recent interview with Variety. She revealed that her life wasn’t always glamorous, and her early days were filled with hard work and determination. At just 18, she landed a role in the Australian TV series Upright, which helped launch her career. But even then, she was still living at home.
“I was living in the attic in my family home because we didn’t have enough rooms – it was so hot in there,” she said. During this time, she was also working as a dishwasher in a popular Sydney restaurant. “I was a stick of a thing. I was washing these dishes so proudly and so terribly, and it was an open kitchen, so everyone could see me.”
Her hard work paid off when she landed her breakout role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. This role not only showcased her acting talent but also brought her into the spotlight on a global scale.
Now, Alcock has taken on the role of a lifetime, playing Supergirl in the upcoming blockbuster directed by Craig Gillespie. She expressed her excitement about the film and its impact on young women. “I am so excited for all the young women who are going to see this,” she told Variety.
However, the road to stardom hasn’t been without challenges. Alcock admitted that she is trying not to engage with the online trolls who have already begun making sexist comments against the female superhero. Despite this, she remains focused on her craft and the positive message the film aims to convey.
The film features a stellar cast, including Jason Momoa, Eva Ridley, and David Corenswet. Alcock’s casting in the film was announced more than two years ago by Co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn. He praised her talent and expressed his excitement about her involvement in the DC Universe.
“Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU,” Gunn wrote. He also highlighted how impressed he was with her auditions and screen tests for Supergirl.
“Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira,” Gunn said.
Alcock expressed her gratitude on Instagram, writing: “So excited to be a part of the DC fam – thank you so much to @jamesgunn for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl 💙🥹💙.”
As the release of Supergirl approaches, fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the film. For Alcock, this role represents not just a career milestone but also a chance to inspire a new generation of young women. Her journey from the kitchen to the big screen is a testament to her dedication, talent, and resilience.
