Rowan Blanchard has always been open and honest when it comes to sharing her thoughts on movies. Her reviews on Letterboxd are known for their depth and insight, but there’s a clear pattern in the types of films she chooses to write about. While she often shares detailed opinions on movies she truly enjoys, she tends to avoid writing about those she doesn’t like. This approach has sparked curiosity among fans and critics alike.
Blanchard’s honesty on the platform is well-documented. She has written compelling reviews for films such as Heavenly Creatures, showcasing her ability to articulate her thoughts clearly and passionately. However, it’s not just about what she says—it’s also about what she chooses not to say. According to the actress, she avoids writing reviews for films she doesn’t genuinely appreciate. This rule, while seemingly simple, reveals a deeper understanding of how she navigates her public persona.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, Blanchard was asked about her selective approach to reviewing films. She confirmed that she only writes about movies she loves and avoids commenting on those she dislikes. When pressed further, she joked about the reasoning behind this decision: “No, because I’m an actress and I want to be employed.” While the comment was lighthearted, it highlights a practical consideration in her career.
This policy also explains why she hasn’t written a review for The Testaments, the show she stars in. The series has gained massive popularity, with over 45 million streaming hours globally. A second season has already been greenlit, and Blanchard is set to return as her character, Shu. In a recent conversation about the upcoming season, she shared her hopes for her character’s development.
“I’m curious what will make her think that there is something bizarre going on, because I don’t think she really does until towards the end,” she said. “So I wonder what will make her crack a little bit.”
Her reflections on the show reveal a deep connection to her role and a desire to see her character evolve in meaningful ways.
Beyond her work on The Testaments, Blanchard has also spoken about her experiences growing up in Hollywood. She started her career as a child actor and spent much of her early life in Los Angeles. While many people associate the city with wealth and glamour, Blanchard described her own experience as quite different.
“I had a very different life,” she told Teen Vogue. “It’s also a different Los Angeles. My LA is very different, I think, than people who conceptualize LA as a rich, extravagant [place], which it is. It is extravagant and it is ridiculous and it is Hollywood, but it’s also a lot of other things.”
She also reflected on the hard work that went into building her career. From starring in Spy Kids: All the Time in the World to appearing in Girl Meets World, Snowpiercer, and The Testaments, her journey has been marked by dedication and perseverance.
Looking ahead, it seems likely that Blanchard will continue to take on challenging and diverse projects. Her thoughtful approach to both her acting and her reviews suggests a strong commitment to her craft and a desire to maintain authenticity in her work.
