Arne Slot’s Vision for Liverpool’s Future
Arne Slot has expressed his belief that high expectations should be placed on Liverpool for the upcoming season, despite the significant changes in the squad. He emphasized that the team is going through a transition phase, but this should not be used as an excuse for any lack of performance.
Liverpool have yet to secure their spot in the Champions League this season. Despite being the defending champions and having invested £450 million in the summer transfer window, they currently sit in fifth place with one game remaining. This situation highlights the challenges the club is facing.
Further Changes on the Horizon
There will be more upheaval in the coming months as key players like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are set to leave. Additionally, there are uncertainties surrounding the futures of players such as Alisson, Joe Gomez, and Curtis Jones. However, Slot remains firm in his stance that these changes should not detract from the team’s ambition to compete for major titles.
Slot stated, “When I say we are in a transition, I don’t mean to not expect anything from us. I hope nobody feels that. I was expecting, just as you all here, that we were more able to compete for things than we were this season.”
He acknowledged the losses in the FA Cup and Champions League, noting that even the teams they faced were formidable opponents. In the Premier League, it was evident early on that they had little chance of winning the title.
Building on Previous Success
Slot finds inspiration in Liverpool’s progress under his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp. He believes that with a few strategic signings, the team will be stronger next year. He said, “I think Jurgen’s best team that was competing for every single trophy at that time took a few years to bring together as well. And we have made very good steps in terms of signings last summer and these players will evolve with the ones we already had and if we can add one or two then, I think, we as a group will look much better next year.”
Strengthening the Coaching Staff
In addition to his plans for the squad, Slot is keen to bring in his former Feyenoord coach, Etienne Reijnen, to join his backroom staff. He mentioned, “It is fair to say that I have worked with him before. And I have a very high regard for him in terms of the coach he is. It is also clear that I tried to sign him two years ago when I first came here but we couldn’t do it.”
