Star Wars spin-off claims box office crown as Obsession makes history

The New Star Wars Film: A Mixed Reception at the Box Office

The latest Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, has made a strong start at the box office during the Memorial Day weekend. However, it is still expected to have one of the lowest opening weekends in the franchise’s history. The film, directed by Jon Favreau, who also directed Iron Man, opened with $33 million in the U.S. on Friday. Industry analysts predict that the movie will earn between $80 million and $100 million over the entire opening weekend.

This performance places it below the previous lowest opening for a Star Wars film, which was Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. That movie grossed $84.4 million over a three-day weekend and $103 million over the four-day Memorial Day holiday period.

A Unique Achievement for the Horror Film Obsession

In contrast, the horror film Obsession has achieved an unusual feat by outperforming its opening weekend in its second week. According to Variety, the film, created by YouTuber Curry Barker, earned $17.2 million in its debut and is now expected to make $19.9 million this weekend. This unexpected success highlights the unpredictable nature of the box office and the growing influence of independent and niche films.

The Mandalorian and Grogu: A Spin-Off with High Expectations

The Mandalorian and Grogu is a big-screen adaptation of the popular Mandalorian series. It features Pedro Pascal as the masked bounty hunter, who teams up with Grogu—also known as Baby Yoda—to rescue Rotta the Hutt, the estranged son of Jabba the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White from The Bear.

The film was produced with a reported budget of $165 million before marketing costs, making it the cheapest Star Wars movie ever made. This is a significant shift from the typical high-budget productions associated with the franchise. Additionally, it marks the first time that Jon Favreau has directed a full-length Star Wars film. He previously worked on the Mandalorian series, as well as the limited series The Book of Boba Fett and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Critical Reactions and Mixed Reviews

Despite its commercial potential, The Mandalorian and Grogu has received mixed critical reviews. One notable review came from The Independent critic Clarisse Loughrey, who gave the film a two-star rating. She criticized the film for feeling like “three episodes of the previously planned fourth season of The Mandalorian stitched together and called a day.”

Loughrey added that while the film might have been adequate as a mid-season arc for the characters, it fell short as a feature film. She described it as “the dullest and most inconsequential Star Wars film ever made,” particularly noting the lack of effort and the underutilization of actors like Sigourney Weaver.

However, Loughrey praised the horror film Obsession, awarding it four stars. She commended the film for its willingness to create two monsters from its cautionary tale, highlighting its unique approach to storytelling.

The Role of Independent Media

Independent media plays a crucial role in providing unbiased news and diverse perspectives. Readers of The Independent are often described as global citizens who value real facts and honest opinions. In a world where information is increasingly fragmented, such publications offer a trusted source of content that empowers readers to form their own opinions and take a stand on issues they care about.
