Sydney Coach Owns Up to Mistake

Sydney Coach Acknowledges Bailey Smith’s Stellar Performance

Sydney coach Dean Cox has taken responsibility for Bailey Smith’s impressive performance during the game on Saturday night. In a crucial third quarter, where the Swans were trying to close the gap, Geelong’s Bailey Smith delivered a standout display with 18 disposals and a goal, helping the Cats maintain a 14-point lead at half-time. This performance ultimately contributed to Geelong’s 27-point victory.

Smith ended the match with an outstanding 32 disposals and seven clearances. He was given more freedom to play after being closely marked by James Jordon in the first half. His efforts played a key role in Geelong securing an 8-3 record.

Cox reflected on the situation, acknowledging the impact of Jordon’s presence in the first half. “To be able to do it in the first half, James (Jordon) was really important for us,” Cox said. “When a side is gaining momentum, it’s things you try and discuss—do we drop this or spin more numbers through the middle of the ground? It didn’t work, and I’ll be the first to put my hand up for that.”

He also highlighted the significance of Smith’s performance in the third quarter. “He had 18 (disposals) in the third quarter. That’s a collective effort as well. I think that’s part of the way our defense and our midfield were beaten tonight.”

Balancing Life and Football

In a post-game interview on Fox Footy, Smith discussed the importance of maintaining balance in his life. “I’ve got a lot of people that keep me grounded,” he said. “I’m separating my identity from who I am and what I do, distinguishing between Bailey the footballer and Bailey the person. I don’t want to put too much weight on my performance.”

Smith emphasized that there is much more to life than just football. “There’s so much more to life than this game. Having perspective means there’s no pressure to play well. Just go out there and let it all out.”

He added, “It’s about expressing yourself and putting it in perspective. At the end of the day, it’s just a game. If I play well, it’s great, but if not, who cares? Bailey the person is different from Bailey the player.”
