Anthony Gordon’s Arrival in Barcelona Marks Major Transfer Move
England and Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has made his way to Barcelona, arriving via private jet ahead of a potential £70 million transfer. The winger left Newcastle International Airport at 11:10 am and landed in the Spanish city in the early afternoon. His arrival marks a significant moment in his career as he prepares for a medical with the LaLiga champions.
Barcelona recently secured a deal for the 25-year-old winger, beating both Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the race to sign him. The sporting director, Deco, met with Gordon’s representatives on Monday, and it was announced on Wednesday that a £70 million agreement had been reached. This figure includes bonuses and a future percentage of any sale for Newcastle.
Gordon’s camp had previously engaged with both Barca and Bayern Munich. While personal terms with the Bundesliga club were in place for several weeks, Bayern would not exceed their £60 million valuation. This led to Barcelona stepping in with a more attractive offer.
The England international finished the season as Newcastle’s top scorer with 18 goals. However, he missed the final six games of the campaign amid speculation about his future. Manager Eddie Howe admitted that this uncertainty was keeping Gordon out of the team.
Everton holds a sell-on clause that will see them receive 15% of the profit from Gordon’s sale to Newcastle, who signed him for £45 million in 2023. This clause could have implications for future transfers involving the player.
Gordon’s arrival in Barcelona raises further questions about the future of Marcus Rashford, who has impressed on loan from Manchester United. The only obstacle preventing Barcelona from signing Rashford permanently has been financial. It is therefore surprising to see the club make a significant investment in Gordon.
Despite this, Barcelona still intends to discuss a deal for Rashford with Manchester United this week. Their goal remains to secure another loan rather than a permanent move. Hansi Flick’s side has until June 15 to trigger a clause to buy the England forward for £26 million.
Deco was in London in the days leading up to the FA Cup final, meeting with potential targets. He also met with Gordon’s representatives during this time to express genuine interest. In addition, he met with Joao Pedro’s agents, although Chelsea has no desire to sell the player.
Liverpool, who had long shown interest in Gordon, will now have to turn their attention elsewhere. They are focusing on RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, valued at £85 million, and Paris St Germain’s Bradley Barcola as alternative options.
Gordon came close to joining Liverpool two years ago when a medical was set up in Germany while he was on international duty at Euro 2024. However, the deal fell through when Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest instead.
