Gabriel Magalhaes’ ex-coach calls Arsenal star ‘biggest career regret’

A Career Shaped by Opportunities and Regrets

Jean-Louis Garcia, the former manager of Troyes, recalls a moment in his career that still lingers heavily on his conscience. It was when he had the chance to bring Gabriel Magalhaes on loan to the club, but failed to give the Brazilian defender the opportunity he deserved. Garcia now admits that this decision is the biggest regret of his career.

Gabriel Magalhaes, who currently plays as a central defender for Arsenal and the Brazilian national team, has since become one of the most dominant players in his position. His contributions have been vital in Arsenal’s recent Premier League success, and he is set to play a crucial role in the club’s quest for the Champions League title against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest. Following that, he will head to the World Cup with Brazil, where he aims to further solidify his reputation on the global stage.

Despite his current success, Magalhaes’ journey to the top wasn’t straightforward. He initially arrived in Europe with Lille, but his early career was marked by two unsuccessful loan spells. The first of these was at Troyes, where Garcia saw potential in the young defender and brought him in on a short-term deal.

However, Troyes had just been promoted from Ligue 2 and already had a stable central defensive partnership in place. Garcia explained that Magalhaes arrived with an injury and was never given the chance to shine.

The Missed Opportunity

‘It’s the biggest regret of my career,’ Garcia told L’Equipe. ‘When he arrived, we realised he couldn’t train at full capacity. He was carrying an old adductor injury. We quickly put a protocol in place. We told ourselves we had time. But all of this dragged on until the Christmas break.’

Despite his belief in Magalhaes’ potential, Garcia struggled to commit to starting the defender regularly. He did give Magalhaes a chance in the Coupe de France against Saint-Étienne, where the player finally showed his quality. However, the match against Dijon was postponed, and by the time the next Ligue 1 game came around, Garcia had his full squad available, leaving Magalhaes out once again.

‘I was determined to play him again against Dijon, but the match was postponed. And in the following Ligue 1 match, against Strasbourg, I had my full squad back, and that’s when Gabriel realised he wasn’t part of the setup.’

Garcia admitted that he was emotionally invested in the players who helped Troyes achieve promotion, which may have influenced his decision-making. He expressed regret over not giving Magalhaes more opportunities.

From Loan Spells to Success

Magalhaes made just four appearances for Troyes before being sent on loan to Dinamo Zagreb, where he played only once. It wasn’t until his return to Lille in the 2018/19 season that he began to establish himself as a regular starter. His performances under manager Christophe Galtier earned praise, with the coach highlighting Magalhaes’ hunger to play and his work ethic.

‘I saw he had great potential and he was able to seize the first opportunity he got,’ said Galtier. ‘He was hungry to play, and while he bided his time, he worked a lot. He’s an example for other youngsters to follow. It’s a sort of intelligence to behave like that. How often nowadays do you see players not working if they’re not in the squad?’

A Big Move to Arsenal

In September 2020, Arsenal made a significant investment by signing Magalhaes for £27 million. At the time, it was seen as a bold move, but the fee has since proven to be a bargain, given the number of appearances he has made for the club. Before joining Arsenal, Magalhaes was linked with Everton, and then-Lille president Gerard Lopez spoke highly of his potential to succeed in the Premier League.

‘I feel he is among the top five dominant central defenders in Europe right now,’ Lopez said. ‘His statistics, which aren’t well covered outside of France, shows that his percentage for winning duels is pretty unheard of in a league that’s extremely physical. He’s an absolute machine, so to me, he’s well on his way – if not this year – to potentially a really big club.’

A Home at Arsenal

Magalhaes has since grown fond of his time at Arsenal, expressing his emotional attachment to the club and his desire to achieve more success with them. He shared his feelings with ESPN, stating that he feels at home at the club and that his family also loves it.

‘I think that since I arrived at Arsenal, I have been very well received. So it’s the club that I have in my heart forever,’ he said. ‘I’m very happy here. I feel at home, my family loves the club. It’s been satisfying for me to have all this time with the Arsenal jersey, so I certainly want to achieve great things here.’

Looking Ahead

As Magalhaes prepares for the World Cup with Brazil, he remains focused on his future with Arsenal. With six years at the club under his belt, he continues to dream of achieving more success and bringing joy to the fans who support him. His journey from loan spells to becoming a key player for both club and country is a testament to his resilience and determination.
