Neymar’s Calf Injury: World Cup Impact and Brazil’s Backup Plans

Neymar’s Inclusion in Brazil’s World Cup Squad

Neymar’s inclusion in Brazil’s 26-man World Cup squad came as a surprise, especially considering he hasn’t played for the national team in nearly three seasons. Despite this, the aging star still possesses the magical touch that has made him one of the most iconic players in Brazilian football. He has managed to score four goals and provide two assists in eight matches with his boyhood club, Santos, helping them avoid relegation from Serie A.

However, there have been concerns about his ability to perform at the highest level during the tournament. His health has been a point of worry, and recent setbacks have raised questions about his participation. With the World Cup approaching, another injury has cast doubt on whether he will be able to join the team in North America in June.

Neymar Injury Update

Neymar suffered a calf injury during Santos’ 3-0 loss to Cortiba on May 17. He missed the last three matches of his club side due to the issue, initially reported as a bruised right calf. Despite this, Neymar downplayed the severity of the injury, claiming it wouldn’t prevent him from playing in the upcoming World Cup.

After watching Santos defeat Deportivo Cuenca in their Copa Sudamericana match on May 26, Neymar said, “It’s right here, in one piece.” However, the situation proved to be more serious than expected. Brazil’s team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, confirmed that the forward sustained a Grade 2 tear.

“He reported here at Granja Comary yesterday, underwent all the medical exams, which concluded with an MRI that revealed a Grade 2 calf injury, not just swelling,” Lasmar explained. “He is expected to be cleared to play in two to three weeks.”

How Long Is Neymar Out?

Neymar is set to miss 2-3 weeks due to his injury. This means he will not be available for Brazil’s warm-up games against Panama (May 5) and Egypt (June 5). The World Cup begins with Brazil’s match against Morocco on June 13. According to Insider Fabrizio Romano, Neymar could also miss this game.

How Old Is Neymar?

At 34 years old, Neymar is the oldest forward in Brazil’s attack. His age and recent injuries have affected his athleticism, making him more vulnerable defensively. As a result, he may not be a likely starter in the tournament. However, Brazil has not ruled him out of the World Cup, and his recovery timeline aligns with the start of the Selecao’s campaign.

Will Neymar Miss the 2026 World Cup?

Currently, Neymar is still expected to participate in the World Cup. If he is unable to take part in the warm-up games, it would make sense for Carlo Ancelotti’s staff to adopt a cautious approach to ensure he returns to the pitch in time. He is a doubt for the World Cup opener against Morocco at MetLife Stadium on June 13. The team will then face Haiti on June 19 and Scotland on June 24, where he might be introduced in those games.

Potential Neymar Replacements

If Neymar is ruled out of the World Cup, there are several Brazilian attackers who could step in. Joao Pedro and Richarlison are the top names, having scored 15 and 10 goals respectively for their clubs, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Joao Pedro is young and energetic, while Richarlison had a strong performance in the 2022 tournament, scoring three goals, including a memorable scissor kick against Serbia.

Other players who could be called up in the event of Neymar’s absence include Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus, Real Betis’ Antony, and Manchester City’s Savinho.
