A New Sci-Fi Adventure from the Duffer Brothers
Netflix viewers have been captivated by the latest offering from the Duffer Brothers, a new sci-fi series that has quickly made waves. Following the controversial ending of their beloved ’80s fantasy epic, Stranger Things, the brothers have been under immense pressure to deliver another hit. And they have done just that with their latest creation.
After the release of the horror series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and a spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, the Duffer Brothers have once again proven their talent with their newest project. The series has already climbed to number one in the top 10, showcasing its massive appeal.
Earlier this month, Netflix released the eerie new sci-fi series, The Boroughs, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. This marks a return to form for the iconic producing partners. Described as “Stranger Things for pensioners,” the show follows grieving widow Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), who reluctantly moves to a desert retirement community where he discovers something is lurking beneath its perfect surface.
The show also stars Geena Davis, Alice Kremelberg, and Bill Pullman. It has already received a 95% critics’ score and rave reviews from fans. Many viewers have praised the series, with one user writing, “Safe to say I am HOOKED. The Duffer Brothers have a good one with this show.” Another fan shared, “If you like Steven Spielberg-esque sci-fi and Stranger Things, The Boroughs on Netflix is amazing.”

Fans have also highlighted the entertainment value of the show. One user wrote, “Netflix has been dropping so many hit shows lately because The Boroughs has me hooked.” Another viewer, Dibia, declared that The Boroughs, along with other recent releases, has totally “justified the subscription.”
A review from The Boroughs review’s Senior TV Reporter gave the show a three-star rating. While the reporter acknowledged the charm of the cast, including Geena Davis, Alfred Molina, and Denis O’Hare, she noted that the material was somewhat thin. She mentioned that she had figured out what was going on by the halfway point, but the mystery wasn’t compelling enough to keep her engaged.
Despite this, the praise from reviewers has been widespread. Empire Magazine described The Boroughs as “more than just a spiritual successor to Stranger Things,” highlighting its originality and success on its own terms. The Los Angeles Times called it “unexpectedly entertaining” and praised its mix of sentimentality, sincerity, and humor.

Discussing the origins of the series with Deadline, co-creator Will Matthews shared that the idea came from a desire to create something unique. He explained, “We thought: ‘Alright, this is it. We’ve got to do a show that you could only do with the Duffer Brothers behind you, super arty and weird, and you need that muscle.’” He added that the concept was born from a love of monsters and a personal connection to aging.
Clearly, the series has struck a chord with audiences, and while the future of the show remains uncertain, its current reception suggests it has found a winning formula.
The Boroughs is now available to stream on Netflix. If you have a celebrity story, video, or pictures, you can get in touch with the team by emailing [email protected], calling 020 3615 2145, or visiting the Submit Stuff page.
