Michael Owen Advocates for Viktor Gyokeres’ Return in Champions League Final
Michael Owen has expressed his belief that Viktor Gyokeres’ recent form is a strong enough reason for Mikel Arteta to recall the striker for Arsenal’s upcoming Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. Following their league triumph last weekend, Arsenal is now set to aim for a historic double when they face PSG in their first Champions League final in 20 years.
The Gunners were eliminated by PSG in the semi-finals last year, and this time around, Luis Enrique’s side are considered slight favorites to defend the title they won convincingly against Inter last year in Munich. However, Arsenal has yet to suffer a defeat in this season’s competition and showcased impressive performances when they knocked out Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals.
Gyokeres, in particular, delivered two standout displays against Atletico, scoring in the first leg of the tie and then putting in a man-of-the-match performance as Arsenal secured a win back at the Emirates a week later. Despite being dropped to the bench for Arsenal’s last two league games against Burnley and Crystal Palace, Owen believes Arteta must bring the 27-year-old back into the starting lineup for Saturday’s high-stakes final.
‘I think Gyokeres has to start in the Champions League final, 100 per cent yes,’ Owen said.
‘He has been in outstanding form, scoring goals, contributing to goals and leading the line really well in recent weeks, and he is now a real threat up front for Arsenal. In the Champions League semi-finals, he played well, and I think he can cause PSG problems as defensively they aren’t as strong.’
Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s match, a first league triumph in 22 years will ensure that this season is etched into Arsenal’s history.

Owen also believes that the club does not need to make significant moves in the transfer market this summer as they prepare to defend their league title next season. Speaking via Lucky Rebel World Cup Odds, he added: ‘Arsenal have a very good squad, which has taken them to the title and on the brink of Champions League success, so they can keep their powder dry and if a special player becomes available they can go and get them.’
‘But they already have a top goalkeeper, outstanding defence, and the midfield is solid. Maybe the only area would be if a striker became available who can complement what they have already, but I would say Arsenal are in a very good position and have the upper hand now as Premier League champions.’
