Andrew Johns urges 33-year-old’s return as NSW star ruled out of State of Origin

Andrew Johns Urges NSW Coach to Recall Api Koroisau for State of Origin 2

With the upcoming State of Origin 2 match on the horizon, former rugby league star Andrew Johns has made a compelling case for the inclusion of Api Koroisau in the New South Wales squad. This comes after hooker Blayke Brailey was ruled out due to a broken arm, leaving a significant gap in the team’s lineup.

Brailey, who made his Origin debut in Game 1, played a crucial role in the Blues’ dramatic 22-20 victory over Queensland. He came off the bench in the second half and provided an essential try-assist for Nathan Cleary, showcasing his impact on the field. However, Brailey’s performance was cut short when he suffered a fractured forearm during a match for the Cronulla Sharks against Manly on Friday night.

Despite the setback, Brailey has expressed confidence that he will be back in time for the third game of the series, aiming to miss only three weeks. Unfortunately, this means he will not be available for the second match, prompting calls for a replacement.

Speaking on Channel 9, Johns emphasized that Koroisau should be considered for the position. The 33-year-old Wests Tigers veteran has previously represented NSW in four Origin games, though his last appearance was in 2023. His return to the team is seen as a strategic move, especially given his experience and familiarity with the high-pressure environment of State of Origin.

“Api Koroisau is back this weekend,” Johns stated. “The other option was Wayde Egan (from the Warriors). But if you said to me now, ‘Who would Laurie pick?’, I would say if Api Koroisau comes back and plays well, I think it’s Api Koroisau.”

Brad Fittler Suggests Alternative Options

While Johns advocates for Koroisau, former NSW coach Brad Fittler has also weighed in on the matter. Fittler suggested that Koroisau should be the first choice but also highlighted the potential of Connor Watson as an alternative.

Watson, who was axed for Game 1, had been a regular in the Origin line-up in 2024 and 2025. His versatility made him a valuable asset, but the introduction of the six-man bench has opened up new possibilities for specialist positions. Fittler noted that Watson could still play a role, offering flexibility in case of any unexpected issues.

“I’d say Api Koroisau just through experience,” Fittler explained. “The other thing you can also do is carry Connor Watson as well … and Connor Watson gives you the ability if something happens, he plays a bit of lock forward, bit of hooker as well … He’s done it for NSW before, he’s been part of winning series, so there’s experience there.”

Fittler added that the current setup allows for greater flexibility, with experienced players available to fill key roles. “But there’s good options, that’s the handy thing. Laurie’s in a pretty good position where he’s got players that have got State of Origin experience, and also the six-man bench gives you some flexibility.”

Phil Gould’s Perspective

Earlier this year, Phil Gould echoed similar sentiments, stating that Koroisau would be “first picked” if he were the NSW coach. He expressed confusion over why Koroisau has fallen out of favor in recent years, highlighting his value as a player.

The debate around Koroisau’s inclusion underscores the importance of experience and adaptability in the high-stakes world of State of Origin. With Brailey sidelined, the decision on who fills his spot will be critical for the Blues’ chances in the upcoming matches.
