Essendon’s New Chapter Begins with a Crucial Match
Essendon’s interim coach, Dean Solomon, is optimistic that an upcoming trip to face West Coast will bring a much-needed boost to both the playing group and the reshuffled football staff following the sacking of Brad Scott. The decision to part ways with Scott came after he led the Bombers to just one win in the past 12 months, leaving the club at the bottom of the ladder with a 1-10 record this season.
The match against the Eagles (3-8) at Optus Stadium is set to be a pivotal moment for the team. A large and local crowd is expected for the Sunday twilight fixture, which coincides with the WA Day public holiday. Solomon sees this as an opportunity for the team to come together and focus on their performance.
“We jump on a plane together … get over there, connect, and enjoy each other’s company,” Solomon said this week. “We’re going to confront a side that’s in reasonable form. Their last three weeks have been pretty impressive, West Coast, they’re building nicely. So we know what’s coming, we know what we’re going to walk into, but it is a great opportunity to jump on a plane together and see what we can do.”
A Dramatic Week for Essendon
The past week has been a whirlwind for Essendon. James Hird has hinted at his interest in returning as coach after the news of Scott’s departure broke on Tuesday. This came amid public suggestions from former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley and West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson that the job was Hird’s to lose.
In addition, Scott’s former assistant Ben Jacobs and head of psychology and wellbeing Ben Robbins attended Solomon’s first session in charge on Thursday. However, they later surprised the Bombers by resigning. In response, Brent Stanton has stepped up as midfield coach, while development coach Michael Hurley will fill Solomon’s role in charge of the defense.
Solomon has not publicly expressed any desire to take on the senior coaching role. Instead, he is focusing on the immediate task of facing West Coast and guiding the Bombers through the rest of the season.

“I’m really just here to represent our players and our staff and ensure that we hit the finishing line with momentum,” Solomon said. “It’s a challenging time for them, especially our young (playing) group. I’ve been tasked with the role to navigate that and that’s something I’m very grateful for.”
Team Changes and Key Players
Essendon has made five forced changes to their team after a poor loss to Richmond last week. The captain, Andrew McGrath, is out with a broken jaw. Mason Redman, Sam Durham, Matt Guelfi, and Jye Caldwell are also unavailable. On the positive side, Nik Cox, Elijah Tsatas, Will Setterfield, Saad El-Hawli, and Max Kondogiannis are all returning to the lineup.
West Coast, on the other hand, remains unchanged after a spirited performance in their recent narrow 10-point defeat to Collingwood in Scott Pendlebury’s record-breaking 433rd game. This presents a challenge for Essendon as they look to turn their season around.
