The secret behind our ’50 greatest World Cup players’ list

The Greatest 50 Players in World Cup History

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, set to take place in North America, a significant list has been compiled highlighting the greatest 50 players in the history of the tournament. This list, created by The Independent, offers an insightful look into the legends who have left an indelible mark on the global stage.

The challenge of selecting the top 50 players from over 3,000 participants across 22 editions of the men’s FIFA World Cup is no small feat. The criteria for inclusion were clear: players must have starred in tournaments and played a key or historic role in certain or multiple events. It was not simply a matter of identifying the best players to feature in a World Cup, but rather those who have made a lasting impact on the competition.

Criteria and Compilation

To compile this list, 14 journalists were asked to submit their top-30 greatest-ever World Cup players. From these submissions, a total of 80 players were identified throughout the tournament’s 96-year history. A points formula was then used to determine the final rankings. Each player received points based on their position, with 50 points awarded to the top pick, decreasing gradually down to one point for the 30th position.

This method ensured that the final list reflected a comprehensive evaluation of each player’s contributions and legacy within the World Cup context.

The results of the voting revealed some of the most iconic names in football history:

  1. Pele (Brazil) – 690 points, with 12 judges picking him as their No 1.
  2. Diego Maradona (Argentina) – 593 points, with two judges placing him at the top.
  3. Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 543 points.
  4. Franz Beckenbauer (Germany) – 457 points.
  5. Ronaldo (Brazil) – 440 points.

World Cup Popularity

Certain World Cups have produced more legendary players than others. The 2006 tournament in Germany had 12 players in the top-50, while the 1966 event in England featured 10. The 1994 and 1998 tournaments in the USA and France each had 9 players on the list. In contrast, the 1930 and 1950 World Cups, held in Uruguay and Brazil respectively, had no players in the top-50.

Notable Mentions

Beyond the top 50, several other players were recognized for their contributions. These include Angel Di Maria, Toto Schillaci, Mario Zagallo, Jose Nasazzi, and many others.
