“Touch and Go”: From Lions Glory to Life-Threatening Battle

A Fairytale Farewell and a Horrifying Postscript

Nic White’s career with the Wallabies was marked by several false starts, but ultimately, he experienced what many athletes dream of: a fairytale farewell. However, his story took an unexpected turn when he contracted sepsis after undergoing leg surgery, leading to a life-threatening situation.

Sepsis is a severe condition that can be fatal if not treated promptly. In extreme cases, it has a 50% mortality rate and can kill within 24 hours. White’s experience was particularly harrowing, as he faced a critical period in the hospital where his recovery was uncertain.

Despite the challenges, White has made significant progress. He underwent intensive treatment, spent a month in the hospital, and continues to take medication. Now, he is beginning to realize the plans he had for his post-playing career as an assistant coach for the Western Force.

The End of a Long Career

White’s retirement from the Wallabies came after a recall for the third Lions Test in Sydney. This marked the end of his 16-year, 78-Test career. Initially, he planned to retire after this match, but injury issues forced him to extend his playing time.

He participated in Australia’s historic win over the Springboks in Johannesburg and a narrow loss in Cape Town. After two more thrilling Tests against Argentina, White finally concluded his career in September, posting, “F—, I am gonna miss it.”

Surgery Complications

In October, White underwent an osteotomy operation to correct his bowed legs. The procedure involved straightening both shins and a femur using plates and screws. Initially, everything went smoothly, but five weeks later, he developed an infection that worsened quickly.

The infection led to sepsis, which affected his lungs, throat, and even got close to his heart. White’s case is similar to that of champion NASCAR driver Kyle Busch, who recently died from sepsis due to untreated pneumonia.

According to the Australian Sepsis Network, sepsis is a leading cause of death from infection globally, affecting 84,000 Australians annually, with 12,000 fatalities. Fortunately, White received timely treatment and managed to recover.

Recovery and New Beginnings

White spent a month in the hospital and was on IV antibiotics for an extended period. The infection resurfaced during a trial game, requiring another hospital stay and the removal of some metal work. Despite losing 12 kilograms during his illness, he has been gradually recovering.

White jokes about his height, now being a few centimeters taller than before. He is feeling better and expects to resume running soon. However, he will need to monitor his health for at least the next 12 months.

Looking Ahead

White has been on restricted activity, spending time in a wheelchair during his recovery. He is grateful for the support of his wife, Melissa, and their three sons, Leo, Sonny, and Vin. He also appreciates the support from the Force management and coaching teams.

Initially, White was supposed to be a full-time assistant coach this year but has been largely restricted to helping via laptop analysis and meetings. He still communicates with Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt and has dabbled in punditry for Stan Sport.

This week marks a milestone for White as he is back on his feet for the first time all week. While the year hasn’t gone as planned, it has provided valuable perspective on family and football.

Future Plans and Reflections

White has observed the transition of NRL convert Zac Lomax, who has shown impressive dedication to learning the game. He believes Lomax could be a strong candidate for Wallabies selection.

Although the Force cannot make the finals, they have gained momentum with five wins from the last seven games. White reflects on the importance of how one leaves things, whether in sports or life.

Final Thoughts

White’s journey highlights the challenges athletes face during transitions. While he may not miss the game, he is focused on regaining his health. His experiences have given him a unique perspective on resilience and the importance of taking care of one’s body.

As the Force prepares for their final round game, White remains optimistic about the future. His story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of perseverance.
