Better Value: Great News for Australian Travelers

Australian travellers are set to enjoy enhanced access to some of Southeast Asia’s most popular destinations thanks to a new partnership between Qantas and Philippine Airlines. This collaboration is expected to open up new travel opportunities for frequent flyers, offering them more flexibility and choice when it comes to exploring the region.

Expanded Access to Popular Destinations

On Thursday, Qantas announced that its frequent flyer members can now book Classic Reward seats across the entire Philippine Airlines network. This means that Australian travellers will have access to 15 island holiday hotspots in the Philippines, including Cebu and Palawan. These destinations are known for their breathtaking natural beauty, from pristine beaches to hidden lagoons, making them ideal for island-hopping trips.

The partnership also extends to key destinations in North America and the Middle East, allowing members to connect through Manila to some of the most remote and scenic locations in Southeast Asia. This expansion is particularly appealing for those looking to build an itinerary that combines multiple destinations without the need to return to major hubs.

Growing Interest in the Philippines

The increase in demand for travel to the Philippines is evident in recent data from the Philippine Department of Tourism. According to the latest figures, Australian visitor arrivals rose by 19 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. This reflects a growing trend among Australians seeking unique and diverse travel experiences.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics also reported that just under 27,000 Australians returned from short-term overseas trips to the Philippines in March 2026, compared to 20,000 in March 2024. This upward trend highlights the increasing popularity of the country as a travel destination.

Strengthening Ties Between Australia and the Philippines

Philippine Airlines operates 22 weekly flights between Australia and Manila, with daily services from Sydney and Brisbane. This consistent service ensures that Australian travellers have regular and reliable access to the Philippines.

Richard Nuttall, president of Philippine Airlines, said the partnership with Qantas would provide better value for frequent flyer members. “Together with Qantas, we are strengthening our links with Australia, making it simpler for Australians to visit the Philippines while enjoying greater choice and flexibility with their miles,” he said.

More Rewards and Flexibility

The new reward seats add to the 20 million available seats across Qantas, Jetstar, and 30 partner airlines, including Emirates, American Airlines, and Cathay Pacific. This expansion offers members even more options when it comes to booking flights using their frequent flyer points.

Andrew Glance, Qantas Loyalty chief executive, highlighted the appeal of the partnership. “Many members want their points to take them further than just the major hubs,” he said. “From the world-class beaches of Boracay to the limestone lagoons of El Nino, these are destinations that feel like a true reward. Members can now build an entire island-hopping itinerary using points, connecting through Manila to some of the most remote and beautiful spots in Southeast Asia.”

This collaboration between Qantas and Philippine Airlines is a significant step forward for Australian travellers looking to explore Southeast Asia. With more destinations available and greater flexibility in booking, the future of island-hopping in the region looks brighter than ever.
