Walker makes instant impact in Origin to earn ‘Alfie’ Langer’s praise

A New Star Emerges in the State of Origin

Sam Walker’s performance in the Queensland sheds during the dramatic State of Origin series opener left many in awe, as he navigated the intense pressure of the game with remarkable composure. His efforts were so impressive that even Maroons legend Allan Langer acknowledged his potential to shine in one of the most demanding arenas in rugby league.

During the match at Accor Stadium on Wednesday night, Walker demonstrated a level of skill and confidence that seemed to echo the legendary style of Langer himself. As he dribbled a grubber into the path of teammate Rob Toia, it was clear that the young halfback was not just playing for his team but also for the legacy of Queensland rugby league.

Walker’s performance was nothing short of exceptional. He threw the final pass for another try as Queensland capitalized on a series of errors by the Blues, seemingly taking control of the game. However, the tide turned when Kalyn Ponga received a send-off in the 57th minute, altering the course of the match.

Despite this setback, Langer, who is part of Billy Slater’s coaching staff, praised Walker’s debut as a great one. “He’s a fantastic kid – just his energy and his character,” Langer said. “You know, he’s a larrikin and he plays that way. He’s got that uncanny ability to do things.”

A Rising Star from Ipswich

Hailing from Ipswich and weighing less than 80kg, Walker’s journey to the top has drawn comparisons to Langer. While Langer made his mark at a younger age, Walker had to wait longer to secure his spot in the interstate showpiece. However, he proved himself worthy of the jersey after Tom Dearden suffered an ankle injury, leaving the North Queensland No.7 sidelined for the series.

With the position now firmly in Walker’s hands, Langer offered words of encouragement. “I just said to play his own game and enjoy himself, and he sure does,” Langer said. “He doesn’t stress out too much about things. I just think he did his job so well.”

Building Confidence and Skills

Langer also highlighted the importance of the environment around Walker. “He’s been playing in the NRL so he does it every week, and certainly when you get to this level you improve. Certainly with the players around him, it just gives him more confidence.”

Walker’s natural flair was evident throughout the match, particularly in the first half when Queensland’s freelance football left NSW on the back foot. Queensland and Kangaroos hooker Harry Grant was impressed with Walker’s performance. “He was awesome,” Grant said. “He brought his game. He was really vocal and confident in his own game. We had a number of guys [having their] first time in the squad, getting a feel for the arena. Hopefully, we can build on those combinations.”

Looking Ahead

Walker himself admitted that he felt comfortable in his surroundings but was still trying to process the result. “I felt fine out there. Just at the moment it’s hard … I’m disappointed,” he said. “We’ll be back.”

As the State of Origin series continues, Walker’s performance has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting competition. With his talent, confidence, and determination, he is well on his way to making a lasting impact on the rugby league scene. The future looks bright for this young star, and fans are eagerly anticipating his next move.
