What happens in ‘Euphoria’ season 3? A shocking death and satisfying revenge

A Wild and Unhinged Conclusion to Euphoria Season Three

After a four-year wait, Euphoria returned with a season three that was wilder, darker, and considerably more unhinged than anything that came before it. Now it’s time for it all to come to an end. The third season of the critically acclaimed series delivered a mix of chaos, emotional turmoil, and shocking twists, culminating in a finale that left fans reeling.

The season began five years after high school, with characters navigating their new lives in the suburbs. Cassie and Nate were engaged, though Nate was secretly drowning in debt after taking over his father’s business. Cassie launched an OnlyFans to make money, while Maddy had moved to Hollywood. Jules was in art school, and Lexi was grinding away as a TV writers’ assistant. Meanwhile, Rue was in Mexico, deep in debt to Laurie, which pulled her into the orbit of Alamo Brown, a strip club magnate whose operation she ended up working for after drugs she transported killed someone at one of his parties.

The DEA caught up with her and cornered her into becoming a federal informant, tasked with leading them to both Alamo and Laurie simultaneously. This set the stage for a season filled with betrayal, danger, and emotional highs and lows.

Cassie and Nate’s wedding ended in carnage — Nate lost a toe. His debt spiraled to a staggering $1 million, drawing Maddy dangerously into Alamo’s world as she tried to help. The season’s most unhinged moment arrived in episode five, when Rue ended up buried neck-deep in the ground while Alamo bore down on her on horseback with a polo mallet. She survived — barely.

The same couldn’t be said for Nate, who died in episode seven. Buried alive in a coffin to force Cassie to pay his debts, a rattlesnake crawled in through his air pipe and killed him. Cassie was taken hostage. Maddy was coerced into Alamo’s orbit. And Rue, caught stealing from Laurie’s safe, was given a brutal ultimatum: she had to kill Alamo herself. She called Ali and told him it was her last run. Then came the finale…

What Happens At The End Of Euphoria Season Three?

As the episode opens, the DEA is raiding Laurie’s ranch. Laurie chooses to hang herself rather than be arrested, while Alamo’s crew escapes clean. When agents open a hidden compartment in an ambulance his men drove over the border, they find a dead rat inside — and Alamo immediately knows Rue has been informing on him.

In the aftermath, Alamo plays it warm — praising Rue, tending to her injuries, handing her a bottle of Percocet and telling her it’s for the physical pain only. The gesture reads as kindness. It wasn’t. She takes the drugs and seeks out Ali for a safe space to recover. While there she sees a news blast revealing through murky footage that Fez has escaped from prison, which sends Rue on a frantic chase through the suburbs to all her old haunts. The emotional moment, cut together with flashes of old footage of Zendaya and Angus Cloud on set, was enough to send the tears spilling.

As Rue breaks into her old home, she stumbles upon her mother reading the bible before the scene becomes dream-like. It quickly becomes clear it’s not real. Rue has taken the drugs Alamo gave her and is hallucinating as she slowly dies.

Our worst fears are affirmed when we cut to Ali awaking the next morning to find her body on the couch. When Ali later tests the pills, he discovers they were laced with fentanyl — Rue was poisoned.

Soon after we see him at his recovery group giving an emotional monologue before going home to saw off a shotgun. We’re left hanging on that tendril until later in the episode when Maddy enters a strip club looking to settle the Nate-Cassie debt she’s become entangled in. As Maddy sits down with Alamo, we see a mysterious figure dressed in army gear enter the establishment — it’s Ali, and he’s here for revenge. He shoots up the strip club killing Alamo, whose gun has been quietly tampered with.

Meanwhile, Cassie is planning to turn her and Nate’s mansion into a hype house for OnlyFans models, lying to Lexi about his disappearance, while Jules appears wordlessly in a single scene — painting a portrait of Rue.

Euphoria Ending & How Rue Died, Explained

Rue’s tragic passing in the finale of Euphoria is the result of a fentanyl overdose. Alamo gave her painkillers secretly laced with the potent substance after he learned she betrayed him.

Following her death and his revenge rampage, we see Ali makes his way back to the farmhouse Rue stumbled upon earlier in the season — the quiet, faithful family who gave her shelter while she was crossing the border as a drug mule, and who, without knowing it, planted a seed of faith in her. He tells them she’s gone. They pray together, a chair left empty at the table.

Ali sits opposite it — and just for a second, she’s there. Smiling. Finally at peace.
