South Africa’s Spin Triumph: Hesson Shuts Down Pakistan Critics After ODI Win in Australia

Pakistan’s ODI Series Start and World Cup Preparation

Pakistan’s head coach, Mike Hesson, stood firm in his defense of the team’s preparation strategy for the 2027 ODI World Cup following some criticism over the pitch used in the first ODI against Australia. The match, played in Rawalpindi, saw Pakistan secure a five-wicket victory, marking a strong start to the three-match series. However, some observers questioned whether the spin-friendly surface was an appropriate warm-up for a tournament that will be held mainly in South Africa next year.

Hesson dismissed these concerns, emphasizing that the current approach is part of a broader plan aligned with the upcoming World Cup. He highlighted that the event will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, where spin-friendly conditions are also present.

Arafat Minhas Makes History

One of the standout performances of the match came from young spinner Arafat Minhas, who made his ODI debut. The 21-year-old delivered an impressive spell, taking 5 wickets for 32 runs. This achievement made him the first Pakistani player to take a five-wicket haul on his ODI debut, a significant milestone.

Abrar Ahmed provided valuable support with two wickets, while Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Salman Agha each took one. Australia struggled to find their rhythm on the spin-friendly pitch, as Pakistan maintained pressure throughout the innings. Matthew Short and Matt Renshaw managed half-centuries, but Pakistan never allowed Australia to gain control.

Australia was eventually all out for 200 runs, setting up a challenging chase for Pakistan.

Babar Azam and Ghazi Ghori Lead the Chase

In the chase, Pakistan remained in control for most of the innings. Chasing a target of 201, they never faced significant pressure. Babar Azam played a composed innings, scoring 69 runs, while Ghazi Ghori contributed 65 to keep the momentum going.

Their partnership ensured that the middle order did not face any major issues, allowing Pakistan to steadily move towards victory. The final moments of the match were particularly memorable, as Arafat Minhas returned to hit the winning runs, completing what was a dream debut for the young spinner.

The win gave Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the series, setting the stage for the next matches.

Addressing World Cup Preparation Concerns

Following the game, attention turned to the debate over Pakistan’s World Cup preparation. Critics argued that using spin-friendly pitches at home might not adequately prepare the team for the conditions in South Africa. Hesson addressed these concerns on his X account, clarifying the team’s strategy.

He mentioned that the World Cup will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, where spin-friendly venues exist. Hesson pointed out that it is a misconception to assume all pitches in South Africa are quick and bouncy. He referenced the last ODI series played in South Africa, which included a match in Paarl where spin played a crucial role.

Hesson emphasized that the team has conducted extensive research and will use the next 18 months to prepare for various conditions, ensuring they are ready for the challenges ahead.

Focus Shifts to Lahore

With the first ODI completed, both teams are now heading to Lahore for the remaining two matches of the series. Compared to the pitch in Rawalpindi, the one in Lahore is expected to be more batting-friendly.

The second ODI is scheduled for Tuesday, followed by the final match on Thursday. Pakistan aims to wrap up the series, while Australia will look to bounce back and secure a tie before the decisive game. Both teams will be eager to make the most of the opportunities ahead.
