Marathon Season 2 Launch: Free Week Guide – Download & Play

Marathon Season 2 Launch Details

Marathon’s Season 2 is set to begin on Tuesday, 2 June, and as part of the launch, the game will be available for free-to-play for a week. This is a great opportunity for new and returning players to experience the game without any cost. Here’s what you need to know about how to download it and what to expect.

Bungie’s Marathon will be free-to-play until 9 June on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. To download the game, simply visit the relevant store page for Marathon, and it should appear as a free download for a limited time. However, this offer is only temporary. If you wish to continue playing Marathon after 9 June, you’ll need to purchase the game. Fortunately, any progress you make during the free period will be carried over.

When Season 1 ends, all assets in the Vault and personalised Armoury access will be wiped, with Shells reset to factory standards. This means that everyone will start on an equal footing when Season 2 begins. The developers explained that this reset is intended to allow players to explore the new season together without worrying about facing fully equipped crews right from the start.

It’s important to note that the reset only affects gameplay progression. Achievements, non-seasonal Codex progression, and cosmetics will remain unaffected. This ensures that players can still enjoy their customisations and accomplishments even after the reset.

New Features in Season 2

Season 2 introduces a new variation of the map called Dire Marsh (Night). This night-time environment brings new mechanics, combatants, and locations to explore. Players will need to use a flashlight to see, but this also highlights their position to enemies, adding a layer of challenge.

The developers have described this map as slower-paced compared to Day Marsh, with a more survival-horror feel. It features fewer players and extra environmental challenges, making it a unique experience for those who enjoy suspense and strategy.

In addition to the new map, there’s a new Runner shell in Sentinel. This shell is designed for controlling space and defending areas. Its prime ability is Defender System, which deploys an automated laser platform that identifies and destroys incoming enemy grenades and missiles. It also boosts weapon handling for all nearby crewmates.

The Sentinel’s tactical ability is Snare Mine, a thrown proximity-triggered mine that detonates into several immobilizing submunitions. Its passive trait is Castle Doctrine, which gives increased resistances after taking splash damage and faster weapon handling for close-range weapons when surrounded by enemies.

Another feature is the Prey Tracker, a trait ability that activates a short-range, motion-tracking system allowing players to see nearby moving targets on radar.

There are also two new weapons: the KKV-9SD SMG and the D54 Battle Pistol. These additions provide players with more options to master in the new environment.

New Systems and Upgrades

A new system called the Cradle allows players to improve Runner shells through Season 2. Players can enhance the stats of their shells across six different categories to unlock powerful perks.

The Matter Converter is another key feature, enabling players to turn weapons, equipment, and other items into experience for use in the Cradle. The better the item, the more experience players will gain.

Marathon is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. With Season 2 bringing new content, challenges, and features, it’s an exciting time for players to dive back into the game. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the series, there’s something for everyone in this latest update.
