Tennis World Honours Legacy After Star’s French Open Farewell

Sorana Cirstea’s Final Chapter at the French Open

Tennis fans and commentators around the world are celebrating the remarkable career of Sorana Cirstea, a Romanian veteran who played her final match at the French Open before retiring. Cirstea faced Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals on Tuesday night, losing 0-6 3-6 in just 57 minutes. This defeat marked the end of her 19-year journey at Roland Garros, as she had previously announced that 2026 would be her final year on the professional circuit.

The 36-year-old player experienced one of her most outstanding performances at a grand slam this past week. Her quarter-final appearance was only the third time in her career that she reached the last eight of a major tournament, following her achievements at the French Open in 2009 and the US Open in 2023. Throughout her career, Cirstea has earned over $15 million in prize money, secured four titles on the WTA tour, and achieved a career-high ranking of World No.18.

Despite being in the twilight of her career, Cirstea is enjoying one of her best years, with a strong push for a spot at the year-ending WTA Finals. However, when asked after her loss to Andreeva if she was reconsidering her retirement, she firmly stated that she would not change her mind.

A Career Filled with Gratitude and Growth

“I’m sticking to my decision,” she said. “Nothing changed in my mind. I’m just very grateful how the year is going and the way I’m playing. Overall, it was a very solid tournament.”

Cirstea reflected on the longevity of her career, which she considers one of her greatest achievements. “I never expected to play above age 30 to be honest. I never thought I would have such a long career.”

She also spoke about the personal growth she experienced throughout her time in tennis. “The way I fought, the way I evolved as a player but also as a person, through the years, through tennis. This sport has taught me so much. I’m just very very blessed and very grateful. These are things I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.”

No matter what path she takes after her tennis career, Cirstea emphasized that she will always cherish the sport and remain close to it.

A Trio of Farewells at the French Open

Cirstea became the third player to play their final French Open match at this year’s tournament. Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils are joining her in retirement at the end of the season. Both players bid farewell to Roland Garros with losses in the first round last week.

Other Highlights from the Tournament

On Tuesday night, Marta Kostyuk advanced to the semi-finals by defeating fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina with a score of 6-3 2-6 6-2. She will now face Mirra Andreeva in the next round. In the men’s draw, Alexander Zverev and Jakub Mensik secured their spots in the semi-finals by defeating Rafael Jodar and Joao Fonseca respectively.
