Suspension of Medical Registration for Dr Vahid Reza Adib
The medical registration of Dr Vahid Reza Adib, the partner of former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, has been suspended by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. This decision came just weeks after he was charged with multiple serious offenses, including rape and sexual assault.
The Health Ombudsman confirmed that immediate action was taken to suspend Dr Adib’s registration as a medical practitioner. The suspension means he is currently prohibited from practicing medicine in Australia until further notice. The decision will remain in effect until a Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal overturns it or the Ombudsman revokes the suspension.

Dr Adib, 65, faces three counts of rape, two counts of deprivation of liberty, and one count of sexual assault. He has denied all allegations and is preparing to defend himself in court. The alleged incidents are said to have occurred on March 30 at his luxury apartment in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.
On April 30, police conducted a search of the Goodwin Terrace residence, seizing several items as part of the ongoing investigation. The case is now being heard at the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Dr Adib has been in a long-term relationship with Ms Palaszczuk since 2021, during her time as premier. However, she is not implicated in the alleged offenses and has not been involved in the investigation. There are no accusations against her, and she is not facing any legal consequences.
The timing of the investigation coincided with the launch of Ms Palaszczuk’s book, The Politics of Being Me, which was released on April 28. Her publicist, Max Markson, confirmed that her scheduled book tour and media events have been postponed due to the circumstances surrounding Dr Adib’s arrest.

Dr Adib is a well-known bariatric surgeon who established the Brisbane Obesity Clinic in Auchenflower in 2004. According to the clinic’s website, he has performed over 20,000 surgical procedures throughout his career. His expertise includes laparoscopic surgery and obesity management.
This incident has raised significant concerns within the medical community and among the public, particularly given the high-profile nature of his partner’s political role. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice is served while maintaining the integrity of the medical profession.
The suspension of Dr Adib’s registration underscores the importance of upholding ethical standards in the medical field, regardless of an individual’s personal connections or status. It also highlights the need for transparency and accountability when allegations of misconduct arise.
As the case progresses, further updates are expected from the Brisbane Magistrates Court, and the broader implications of this situation may influence future discussions around professional conduct and legal responsibilities.
