Jimmy Kimmel has always had a knack for turning real-life events into comedic gold, and the Freedom 250 concert was no exception. During his monologue on the May 28 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host took aim at the so-called Great American State Fair, an event that was meant to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. However, what was supposed to be a star-studded affair quickly turned into a farce, with several high-profile performers either pulling out or distancing themselves from the National Mall event.
Jimmy Kimmel Takes Aim at the Lineup

Kimmel opened by highlighting the bizarre nature of the event, joking that it was “Coachella for bands that hired their cousin as their tour manager.” The lineup, which was announced with a nostalgic-heavy roster, included names like Flo Rida, Vanilla Ice, Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, The Commodores, Young MC, Morris Day & The Time, C+C Music Factory, and Milli Vanilli. But as the weeks passed, the list began to shrink dramatically.
Artists Start Walking Away

Martina McBride was one of the first to speak out, claiming that the event had been presented to her as nonpartisan. She later posted on Facebook, calling the portrayal misleading. Other acts, including The Commodores, Young MC, and Morris Day & The Time, also backed out or denied involvement.
McBride took the opportunity to mock the remaining performers, saying, “But don’t worry. Bret Michaels, Flo Rida, Vanilla Ice, and the guy from the Cracker Barrel logo tootin’ on the jug are in it, so far. We’ll check back on that tomorrow to see if they’re still in.”

Michaels soon followed suit, stating that the event had “evolved” into something “divisive” and citing “threats and safety concerns.” His departure only added to the growing list of artists who were no longer associated with the event.
Kimmel Lingers on Milli Vanilli

Kimmel then focused on Milli Vanilli, whose original scandal involved Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus lip-syncing to vocals recorded by others. Pilatus died in 1998, and the real studio vocalists behind the act said they had not been asked to perform.
“Milli Vanilli, or whatever’s left of Milli Vanilli, put out a statement saying they were never asked to perform and would not be taking part in the concert,” Kimmel said.
“How can someone pretend to be Milli Vanilli when Milli Vanilli was pretending to be Milli Vanilli?” he joked.
C+C Music Factory’s Bathroom Rant
Kimmel also took a jab at C+C Music Factory’s Freedom Williams, who defended his scheduled appearance in a seven-minute Instagram rant filmed while he claimed to be on the toilet.
“I feel like hearing from him only once every 35 years isn’t enough,” Kimmel said.
“What a concert this is gonna be,” he joked. “Everything they do, they s—- up. They cannot do anything.”
The event, which was meant to be a celebration of American history, has now become a cautionary tale about the challenges of organizing large-scale cultural events. With so many high-profile artists backing out, it remains to be seen whether the Freedom 250 concert will even take place as planned. For now, it seems that the only thing being celebrated is the absurdity of the situation.
