Kyrgios Roars Back: A Winning Return

Kyrgios Makes Triumphant Return to Court in Stuttgart

The roar of the crowd, the crack of the ball, the sheer anticipation – it’s a sound that has been sorely missed. Nick Kyrgios, the enigmatic Australian tennis star, has made a much-anticipated return to the singles court, gracing the grass courts of Stuttgart with his signature blend of explosive serves, audacious net play, and a forehand that can dismantle any opponent. The question on everyone’s lips is whether this comeback will be a fleeting moment or the start of a sustained resurgence.

Kyrgios’s dominant performance against world No. 36 Corentin Moutet, securing a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory in just 69 minutes, offered a powerful glimpse of his potential. The match, played on Tuesday in Stuttgart (Wednesday AEST), was a welcome sight for fans who have endured a lengthy layoff for the Australian.

Following his impressive win, Kyrgios radiated confidence and a palpable sense of relief. “I feel great and motivated,” he declared. “It’s quite an emotional moment. I had a lot of surgeries, and I’m very thrilled to be back. I had a wrist reconstruction; I had four knee surgeries.” These words underscore the significant physical battles the 31-year-old has faced, making his return to top-flight tennis all the more remarkable.

While the physical toll of his injuries is evident, Kyrgios’s age suggests he has several more years on the professional tour, provided he can maintain both the mental fortitude and the physical resilience. For now, his focus is believed to be squarely on the grass court season, with a particular eye on another tilt at Wimbledon, a tournament where he reached the final in 2022 before injuries began to derail his progress.

The victory over Moutet, while a positive sign, came against an opponent who had lost his last five matches. Nevertheless, Kyrgios executed his game plan flawlessly. He clinched the first set with a decisive ace and sealed the match with a powerful forehand, a shot set up by another thunderous serve that left Moutet with no answer.

This Stuttgart outing marked Kyrgios’s first singles match since January in Brisbane. Prior to that, he hadn’t competed in a singles match since March 2025, and had only managed one singles victory since October 2022. This stark statistic is largely attributable to his limited participation, having played only seven singles matches in that period. His doubles record, however, shows seven matches played, indicating his continued presence on the tour in a different capacity.

The litany of injuries, most notably to his knee and wrist, but also including other setbacks, has been the primary culprit behind his reduced playing time. Now, Kyrgios faces a new challenge in the form of Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro, currently ranked 101. This will be their first encounter on the professional circuit.

The singles encounter is scheduled for Thursday (local time). However, Kyrgios has a doubles match to navigate first, partnering with Alexander Bublik on Wednesday against the duo of Jakub Paul and Ryan Seggerman.

Australian Contingent Flying the Flag in Germany

Kyrgios isn’t the only Australian making waves in Germany. Fellow countrymen James Duckworth and Rinky Hijikata have also secured victories, demonstrating the depth of talent within Australian tennis. Should both players continue their winning form, a potential quarter-final showdown between them looms, although the draw suggests this may be an outside possibility.

Duckworth enjoyed a more straightforward path to his victory, dispatching young German Diego Dedura with a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win. Hijikata, on the other hand, was pushed to his limits by another local wildcard, Tom Gentzsch, ultimately prevailing in a hard-fought three-setter: 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Their next challenges are formidable, with Duckworth set to face fourth seed Jiri Lehecka and Hijikata slated to take on sixth seed Frances Tiafoe. The performances of all three Australians thus far indicate a promising start to the grass court season for the nation.
