Veteran Sues White House Over UFC Deal

Lawsuit Launched to Halt White House UFC Event Amidst Corruption Allegations

A federal lawsuit has been filed by a Virginia political organiser and a military veteran, seeking a court order to prevent the upcoming mixed martial arts event, UFC Freedom 250, from taking place on the White House South Lawn and at the Lincoln Memorial. The event is slated for June 14, a date coinciding with both the 250th anniversary of American independence and Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.

The legal challenge, as reported, brands the arrangement a “corrupt transfer of public resources to a private business ally.” The complaint explicitly states, “This plan is deeply corrupt. The President is giving White and his company what none have enjoyed before: unfettered access to the White House and Lincoln Memorial to stage a private, for-profit sports event, with all the promotional and branding opportunities that accompany such access.”

While UFC Chief Executive Dana White, a close friend and ally of Trump, has publicly positioned the event as a celebration of America’s semiquincentennial, the lawsuit highlights White’s own admission that the event “was Trump’s idea.” The plaintiffs argue that UFC Freedom 250 is, in reality, “a celebration of the UFC’s brand and the 80th anniversary of Donald Trump’s birth.” This, they contend, disqualifies it from receiving the special permits typically required for the use of national monumental grounds.

Restrictions on Public Land Use

Federal law imposes stringent limitations on the private use of both the White House South Lawn and the Lincoln Memorial, both of which are classified as national parklands managed by the National Park Service (NPS). Under the NPS’s standard permitting procedures, no special events, including sporting events, are ordinarily permitted on the South Lawn.

The “Claw” Structure and Environmental Concerns

A significant point of contention in the lawsuit is the physical infrastructure being erected for the event. The UFC has constructed a colossal 92-foot-tall, 600-ton steel structure on the South Lawn, dubbed “the Claw.” The suit claims this structure is “destroying much of the South Lawn in the process.” The complaint further asserts that any structure erected on national monumental grounds must receive explicit authorisation from Congress and undergo a comprehensive review under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Commercial Interests and VIP Packages

The commercial nature of the event is openly acknowledged. One UFC executive has described it as “the greatest earned-marketing tool of all time.” The event is also offering VIP packages priced between $1 million and $1.5 million per person. Numerous sponsors, including the Singaporean cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com, have a vested financial interest in the event’s success.

Trump’s Stance and Comparisons to the Eiffel Tower

Donald Trump has shown no inclination to reduce the scale of the event. In a video shared on TikTok, he suggested that “the Claw” might “never” be dismantled, drawing a comparison to the Eiffel Tower. He reminisced about the Parisian landmark, stating, “It was supposed to be taken down immediately after the World’s Fair. And then they said, you know, we sort of like it.” This comment implies a potential for the structure to remain in place, further raising concerns about the long-term impact on the historic grounds.

Broader Implications and Public Reaction

The lawsuit brings to light concerns about the potential misuse of public assets for private gain and personal celebration. The timing of the event, coinciding with significant national anniversaries and a personal milestone for the former president, has drawn criticism and scrutiny. Reports indicate that Republicans are actively seeking tickets to the White House UFC event, with Trump reportedly curating the guest list for those making substantial pledges. The design of the event has also faced online ridicule, with some users praying for rain to disrupt the proceedings. The situation adds another layer of controversy to an already politically charged landscape, with some suggesting the event could be forced into cancellation at a particularly inopportune moment.
