Messi Matches Klose as Argentina Crush Algeria 3-0

France’s Dominant Start in the World Cup

France kicked off their World Cup campaign with a commanding performance against Senegal, showcasing their prowess on the field. The match started with a goalless first half, but the French team eventually found their rhythm and secured a decisive victory.

Kylian Mbappé, the Real Madrid forward, was instrumental in this win. His stellar performance included scoring twice, which moved him past Pelé with 14 World Cup goals. Mbappé celebrated his achievement by mimicking a flutist, as he had promised during a previous interview. This celebration was a nod to his childhood when he practiced the instrument at the behest of his parents.

Mbappé’s first goal came in the 66th minute, where he burst past Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly and slid the ball past goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. His second goal was a spectacular right-footed shot from 30 yards, which dipped perfectly between Mendy’s outstretched left arm and the crossbar. This goal was described as “a crazy goal” by French defender William Saliba.

The match saw PSG’s Bradley Barcola doubling the lead in the 82nd minute, two minutes after being subbed on. However, Senegal managed to cut the deficit in the fifth minute of stoppage time, only for Mbappé to score again just seconds later. This performance solidified Mbappé’s status as one of the favorites to win the title.

Argentina’s Strong Opening Match

Argentina, led by football icon Lionel Messi, also made a strong start in their World Cup opener. They cruised past Algeria 3-0 with a convincing display. Messi delivered his first World Cup hat trick, matching Miroslav Klose’s career tournament scoring record. This achievement was particularly significant as it came 20 years to the day that Messi made his World Cup debut for Argentina.

Messi’s goals came off a nifty feed from Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul, an early second-half goal, and a final strike moments before subbing out to a standing ovation. This hat trick was the 61st of his career and his 11th while playing with the national team. It was also the fifth straight World Cup game in which Messi has scored.

Despite dealing with a minor hamstring injury leading up to the World Cup, Messi showed no signs of slowing down. His appearance against Algeria was the 200th of his international career match, which began in 2005 at the age of 18. The only players with more are Portugal’s Ronaldo and Bader al-Mutawa.

Norway’s Impressive Victory Over Iraq

Norway made a strong start in their World Cup campaign, defeating Iraq 4-1. Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, was the standout performer, scoring two goals in his tournament debut. His first goal came in the 29th minute, following a cross into the box from David Moller Wolfe. Haaland used his right heel to finish it off, igniting waves of cheers from the Norway supporters.

Haaland’s second goal came just before halftime when he sneaked in front of a poor back pass to Iraq goalkeeper Jalal Hassan. He beat Hassan to the ball and used his shin to put the ball in the back of the net. Norway’s coach Stale Solbakken praised Haaland’s performance, stating that he lived up to the occasion.

Leo Ostigard scored in the 76th minute off a corner kick from Martin Odegaard. An own-goal by Iraq forward Aymen Hussein just before the final whistle completed Norway’s scoring. Despite a brief equalizer from Hussein, Norway secured a convincing victory.

Iraq, playing in the World Cup for just the second time, held its own with a sizable contingent of supporters. Their energy helped them briefly get back into the game, but they ultimately fell short. Iraq’s Hussein Ali expressed his disappointment at the 4-1 loss, calling it a proud moment to be back in the World Cup after 40 years.
