Nick Offerman reveals the reason he turned down a career full of Ron Swanson clones after ‘Parks and Recreation’

For many actors, landing a role that remains forever memorable is a dream come true. But for Nick Offerman, his success as Ron Swanson in ‘Parks and Recreation’ has come with an unexpected challenge.

More than a decade after the beloved sitcom ended, the actor has now opened up about how the character has shaped his career and why he keeps deliberately moving away from it.

Nick Offerman Doesn’t Want Roles Like Ron Swanson From ‘Parks and Recreation’ Anymore

‘Parks and Recreation’ wrapped in 2015. However, it is undeniable that Ron Swanson remains a beloved comedy character even today. But in a recent interview with Variety, Ron Swanson revealed that he doesn’t want to spend the rest of his career repeating the same formula.

“I said, ‘The one thing I don’t want to do is more Ron Swanson,’” Offerman explained. “I think that I’ve done that, and happily so.”

The actor recalled the flood of offers that arrived after his success in ‘Parks and Recreation’. All of these roles felt like a slight variation of Ron Swanson, and Offerman could immediately recognize the similarities.

“OK, this isn’t Ron Swanson, but he’s an ex-Marine and he’s great at grilling,” he remembered. “I was like, ‘That’s Ron Swanson.’”

Offerman intentionally created distance from these characters. He has previously also spoken about the difficulties of escaping the shadow of Ron Swanson. In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, he admitted that audiences still continue to view every performance through the lens of his sitcom persona.

Offerman Is Very Selective About His Career Today

This experience has taught Offerman an important lesson about choosing projects. Instead of chasing every opportunity, he now follows one simple rule. “I started this rule that I generally still adhere to: If I get offered something and I can say no to it, I do,” he said.

For Offerman, the most rewarding work has always come from projects that genuinely excite or challenge him. He believes that the best opportunities come when something unexpected is envisioned for him.

“What I’ve learned is the best thing to do is not look for it”, adding that he simply hopes filmmakers and writers will continue finding unique ways to use him.

This decision has also come because of his life outside of Hollywood. Offerman revealed that he and his wife, actress Megan Mullally, carefully coordinate their schedules to avoid spending too much time apart.

We spend a lot of time negotiating the logistics of our lives so that we simply stay married,” Offerman explained.

The couple doesn’t go longer than two weeks without seeing each other. He continued, “So, when we get back together after two weeks, it’s a great relief. It’s coming out of the desert to a nice chug of water.”
