Patton Oswalt’s Condition for a Ratatouille Sequel
Patton Oswalt has expressed his willingness to return for a sequel to the beloved animated film Ratatouille, but only if certain conditions are met. The 2007 movie, which follows a tiny rat named Remy who dreams of becoming a chef in Paris, became one of Pixar’s most cherished classics and a massive box office success. With several other animated films receiving long-awaited sequels, fans have been speculating about the possibility of a follow-up to Ratatouille.
Oswalt, who voiced the character of Remy, recently shared his thoughts on the potential sequel during an appearance on the Obsessed: The Podcast. He emphasized that he would be interested in reprising his role, but only if the story is genuinely compelling and not just a cash grab.
A Genuine Story Over a Money Grab
Oswalt made it clear that he does not want the sequel to be created simply because it’s a profitable idea. “I don’t want it to come from us going, ‘All right, let’s get out the legal pads and let’s break down a sequel.’ There are a lot of movies where that’s how they’re done, and it always feels inorganic,” he said.
Instead, he wants the sequel to be something that expands the original story in a meaningful way. “I want the sequel to be not the same type of movie, but that same energy that ‘Terminator 2’ or ‘Aliens’ had, which is, there’s an expansion of the story that we actually need to tell… This isn’t just a money grab.”
Oswalt also acknowledged that financial success is important, and the team would welcome the opportunity to earn more money if the sequel gets made. However, he stressed that any profits should stem from telling a genuine story that hasn’t been explored before, rather than making a film solely for profit.
The Legacy of Ratatouille
The original Ratatouille was a huge hit, grossing $623.7 million worldwide and becoming the sixth highest-grossing film of 2007. Its success was due in part to its heartwarming story about talent, determination, and the idea that greatness can come from the most unexpected places.
The film follows Remy, a tiny rat with a passion for cooking, who forms an unlikely partnership with a young garbage boy named Linguini. Together, they create extraordinary dishes at the famous Gusteau’s restaurant, defying the odds and proving that anyone, no matter how small, can achieve great things.
Where to Watch Ratatouille
For those who haven’t seen the original film or want to revisit it, Ratatouille is available to stream online in the U.S. It can be found on Disney+, Fubo, and Hulu. Additionally, it is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
Fans of the movie can enjoy watching it again while waiting for news about a potential sequel. Until then, the story of Remy and Linguini continues to inspire audiences around the world.
What Fans Are Saying
With the recent chatter about a possible sequel, fans have been sharing their thoughts on what they would like to see in a follow-up. Some believe the story should explore new challenges for Remy and Linguini, while others hope for a deeper look into the world of French cuisine and the restaurant industry.
Patton Oswalt’s condition for a sequel has sparked discussions about the importance of storytelling in animation. Many agree that the focus should be on creating a meaningful and engaging narrative rather than simply capitalizing on a popular franchise.
