Arsenal Eyes Oscar Mingueza as Defensive Reinforcements
Mikel Arteta, the head coach of Arsenal, is reportedly considering a move for Oscar Mingueza, a defender from Celta Vigo who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. This potential acquisition comes as the Gunners look to strengthen their defensive line and prepare for possible changes in their squad.
Arsenal has already made some notable additions to their defense in recent seasons. Last summer, they brought in Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie, with the latter’s loan deal expected to become permanent by the end of the current campaign. Despite these signings, the team is still looking to bolster their backline further, especially with the possibility of Ben White leaving the club.
Ben White, an England international, has found himself on the periphery of the starting XI due to Jurrien Timber’s strong performance when fit. With Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba firmly established as the first-choice center-backs, White’s chances of playing in that position are limited.
Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento has been linked with a move to Arsenal, but the cost of acquiring him could be substantial, potentially exceeding £60 million. This has prompted Arsenal to explore more affordable options, leading them to consider Mingueza.
According to reports from Spanish newspaper AS, Mingueza is expected to leave Celta Vigo on a free transfer. The La Liga side has already signed Alvaro Nunez, a right-back, in January, which makes Mingueza’s departure more likely. Arsenal is among the top contenders for his signature, alongside Newcastle. The 27-year-old defender is said to be aiming for a move to the Premier League this summer.
The Gunners’ interest in Mingueza is primarily driven by Arteta, who shares a similar background with the player. Both have risen through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, which could play a role in the potential transfer.
Despite the interest from both clubs, no official contact has yet been made with Mingueza’s representatives. Juventus is also monitoring the situation and is seen as a potential alternative to Arsenal and Newcastle. Other clubs like Aston Villa and Fulham have been linked in the past, but they are not currently actively pursuing a deal.
In addition to Mingueza, several other players are expected to leave Celta Vigo this summer. Central defender Joseph Aidoo and left wing-backs Mihailo Ristic and Franco Cervi are among those likely to follow.
Mingueza’s versatility is one of his key selling points. He can operate effectively as a right-back, centre-back, and left-back, making him a valuable asset for any team. His profile aligns well with the needs of Arsenal, particularly in light of White’s potential departure.
Celta Vigo’s head coach, Claudio Giraldez, has praised Mingueza’s qualities, describing him as a “fantastic player” with a “tremendous personality.” He expressed hope that Mingueza would stay with the club but acknowledged the difficulty in keeping him.
Mingueza has represented Spain at the international level, earning four caps. He was part of the squad that lost to Portugal in the 2023 Nations League final and played a crucial role in Spain’s silver medal-winning team at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan.
As a teenager, Mingueza joined Barcelona’s youth ranks at the age of eight, showing promise as a future star. However, he struggled to secure regular game time under Xavi, citing a difficult relationship with the manager as a reason for his stagnation at the Camp Nou.
“I didn’t have the best mentality in the world either, and that’s why I left Barca, to try to regain my motivation and to enjoy myself,” he explained in an interview with Esport3 in 2024.
