Why didn’t VAR give France a penalty for Mbappe’s tackle in the World Cup?

Kylian Mbappe found himself in a bizarre situation during France’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Senegal in New Jersey on Tuesday. The French forward was convinced he had been fouled and should have been awarded a penalty, only to be left in disbelief when the Australian referee, Alireza Faghani, initially gave a corner kick. The decision was later overturned after a review, resulting in a goal-kick.

The incident occurred when Mbappe dribbled into the box, where Senegal’s Sadio Mane attempted a tackle. As Mane reached for the ball, Mbappe touched it away from his opponent and then fell to the ground under Mane’s challenge. Mbappe could only laugh as the referee waved off the French appeals, awarding a corner instead.

The referee was sent to review the decision using his pitchside monitor, and upon returning to the field, the French players and coaching staff began to celebrate. However, rather than awarding a penalty, Faghani announced that “the attacker initiated the contact.” This explanation left many confused, especially as replays clearly showed that Mane made no contact with the ball.

Pundits were quick to react to the controversial call. Pat Nevin of BBC Sport described the decision as “rubbish” and “utter nonsense,” stating, “No chance at all. How can he [Mbappe] have initiated the contact? The most nonsensical line I have ever heard.”

Alan Shearer also expressed confusion, saying, “I don’t get it. You can see the lunge from Mane and his left leg catches Mbappe. How can Mbappe initiate contact if he is in front of him? It’s bizarre, it really is.”

Darren Cann, an assistant referee at the 2010 World Cup final, added, “I can’t support the referee’s decision to be honest. For me, it is a clear penalty. My phone has blown up with messages from several of the world’s best referees who also can’t understand why a penalty wasn’t given. For me, it is very, very clear, and I am extremely surprised he did not point to the spot after a correct VAR review.”

Despite the controversy, France quickly moved on from the incident. Minutes later, Mbappe capitalized on a cleverly disguised throughball by Michael Olise, scoring a first-time finish to put France ahead. Substitute Bradley Barcola added a second goal, giving the French a two-goal lead.
