Appen Shares: Still a Buy After 109% Surge?

Shares in Australian tech company Appen Ltd (ASX: APX) experienced a notable dip today, shedding 6.2% in early afternoon trade to reach $1.355. This decline contrasts with the broader market, where the All Ordinaries Index (ASX: XAO) was down 1.2% over the same period. Despite this recent downturn, Appen’s stock has shown remarkable resilience, boasting an impressive 108.5% surge since hitting a one-year low of 65 cents on November 21st. This significant rebound begs the question: has the opportune moment to invest in this AI data solutions provider passed, or is there still potential for further growth?

Appen’s Journey: From Market Darling to AI’s Evolution

Appen, once a celebrated name in the technology sector, built its global reputation on providing crucial human-labelled data essential for the training of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. However, the rapid advancements in AI technology are now casting a shadow over its traditional business model.

Mark Gardner of MPC Markets, speaking to The Bull, highlights this evolving landscape. He notes that while Appen once enjoyed a period of immense optimism, with its share price soaring above $35 in July 2020, the core of its business is facing disruption.

Key Challenges Facing Appen:

  • AI Automation: Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly capable of performing data labelling tasks itself, a core service provided by Appen.
  • Synthetic Data Generation: The development of synthetic data, which is artificially generated rather than collected from real-world sources, is advancing rapidly. This could reduce the reliance on human-labelled datasets.
  • Automated Labelling Pipelines: Sophisticated automated pipelines are emerging that can streamline and execute data labelling processes with greater efficiency.
  • Self-Evaluating AI Systems: AI systems are being developed that can assess and validate their own outputs, further diminishing the need for human oversight in the labelling process.

Gardner expresses a cautious outlook, suggesting that the recent uptick in Appen’s share price may be more of a short-term reaction to the general enthusiasm surrounding AI investments rather than a fundamental improvement in the company’s long-term structural prospects.

Recent Financial Performance: A Mixed Bag

Appen released its full-year 2025 results on February 25th, revealing a statutory net loss after tax of US$21.8 million. This represents an increase from the US$20 million loss recorded in the prior corresponding period. The company’s shares were trading at $1.565 on March 26, 2026, shortly after these results were announced.

Despite the net loss, investors reacted positively on the day of the results release, with Appen shares closing up by a significant 27.6%. This positive sentiment appeared to be driven by several factors:

  • Revenue Growth: Appen reported a 4.5% year-over-year increase in operating revenue, reaching $230.8 million.
  • EBITDA Improvement: The company achieved a substantial 251% increase in underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA), before accounting for foreign exchange fluctuations, to $12.2 million.

Appen CEO Ryan Kolln expressed satisfaction with the fiscal year 2025 performance, highlighting “durable improvements to the business, with new wins in generative AI, operational efficiencies, and the revenue trajectory throughout the year.”

Investment Considerations

With shares having more than doubled from their recent lows, potential investors are weighing whether it’s still an opportune time to enter the market for Appen. While the company’s recent revenue and EBITDA figures show some positive momentum, the underlying structural challenges posed by AI advancements remain a significant consideration.

For those considering an investment, it’s crucial to conduct thorough due diligence and consider a range of expert opinions. It’s also worth noting that some investment advisory services, such as Motley Fool’s Share Advisor, have identified other stocks they believe may offer stronger investment potential currently, with Appen not being among their top recommendations.

The performance of Appen’s stock will likely continue to be closely watched as the company navigates the rapidly evolving AI landscape and seeks to adapt its business model to remain competitive.
