A New Wave of Streaming Success
Netflix fans have been captivated by a ‘glorious’ comedy series that has sparked a lot of excitement. The film, titled Problemista, was released in 2023 and made its way to the streaming platform at the end of last month. This has delighted its loyal fanbase.
Problemista is an absurdist take on the 2006 hit The Devil Wears Prada. It follows the story of Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer played by Julio Torres, who struggles to bring his unique ideas to life while working in New York. As his work visa nears its expiration, he takes a job assisting an outcast artist to stay in the country and pursue his dream. He works alongside Elizabeth, an unconventional art critic played by Tilda Swinton, who pledges to sponsor his work visa if he can help set up an exhibition of her cryogenically frozen husband’s artwork.

The film’s synopsis promises a surreal adventure through the treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system. After its debut, it received widespread praise from movie lovers, with a solid 86% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and numerous five-star reviews. Critics have highlighted its clever script and Tilda Swinton’s outstanding performance. One reviewer described it as “The Devil Wears Prada for people with a creative spirit, an anxiety disorder, and a dream.”
Another noted: “So very good. The kind of film that reaffirms imagination is still alive and well in the industry. Playful and confident in itself, with so many honest things to say about the human experience.” Fans praised Tilda Swinton’s performance, calling it “balls to the wall manic” and one of her best.

While some films receive mixed reviews, others find unexpected success. A film dubbed ‘laughable’ and the ‘worst action film ever made’ has rocketed up the Netflix charts. Despite poor reviews from both critics and viewers, with a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.7/10 on IMDb, the movie quickly shot up the Top 10 after its release on April 1. The film, A Line Of Fire, follows former FBI agent Jack ‘Cash’ Conry, played by David A.R. White, as he abandons his role as a spy after losing his wife to focus on raising his daughters.

Despite the criticism, some viewers found the film entertaining. One wrote: “This movie is so spectacularly, catastrophically awful that it transcends badness and becomes pure entertainment gold.” Others admitted it was “terrible” but suggested it “transcends badness” and “becomes pure entertainment.”

Uncovering the Best in Dystopian Drama
Elsewhere, an ‘outstanding’ dystopian Netflix series has been hailed by fans as ‘better than The Handmaid’s Tale.’ Portuguese series 3% first launched on Netflix in 2016 and follows a cast of young people in a poverty-stricken area known as Inland. Each year, an elite group allows the young residents to compete for a place on a virtual island paradise through a series of tests. Only 3% of candidates succeed, leading to a fierce battle of wits each year.

Fans have praised the series for its cinematic quality, intelligent script, and believable acting. One viewer called it “tremendously underrated,” while another described it as “an outstanding dystopian/post-apocalyptic series.” Many recommend watching at least to episode three before passing judgment, as the show only gets better with each season.

A New Western Reimagined
MGM+ has announced a reimagining of the classic Western film The Magnificent Seven. Matt Dillon will lead the cast as Chris Adams, the leader of the gunfighters battling against a land baron. Written and produced by Heroes creator Tim Kring, the series will explore themes of honor, sacrifice, and redemption.

The series will be available worldwide, including the UK, United States, Spain, Germany, and Italy. MGM+’s global head, Michael Wright, praised Dillon’s ability to portray complex, morally conflicted characters, calling him the perfect choice to lead the reimagining.
A Binge-Worthy Western Series
Fans have also been raving about a ‘spectacular’ Western show hailed as “some of Steven Spielberg’s best work.” The six-part series Into the West debuted on TNT in 2005 and premiered on BBC Two in the UK. The show followed the lives of a White family and a Native American family during the American expansion, with Spielberg producing the series.

Critics have praised the series as “some of Steven Spielberg’s finest work,” highlighting its heart-felt perspective of American history. One viewer called it “an amazing story, that anyone who calls themselves an American should see.” Another noted, “The way they tell these unprecedented events through generations of two families, and the joys and tragedies that they endure keeps you glued to the screen every second.”
