First Female Manager Hired by Bundesliga Club in Europe

A Historic Appointment in European Football

Marie-Louise Eta has made history by becoming the first woman to take charge of a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five football leagues. Her appointment as head coach of Union Berlin until the end of the season marks a significant milestone in the world of football. This groundbreaking move came after the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart following a 3-1 defeat to Heidenheim, a Bundesliga struggler.

Eta, who is 34 years old, is no stranger to success in football. She was part of the Women’s Champions League-winning team with Turbine Potsdam in 2010. Currently, she has been serving as the under-19s coach for Union Berlin this season. Additionally, she is set to lead the club’s women’s team from the summer.

Her experience includes working as an assistant to former men’s head coach Nenad Bjelica. Notably, she took on media responsibilities during a Bundesliga game in 2024 when Bjelica was banned from the touchline.

Eta’s immediate challenge is to revive a struggling Union Berlin side that has managed only two wins in their last 14 league matches. This has left them seven points clear of the relegation play-off position. In her statement on the club’s website, Eta acknowledged the precarious situation: “Given the points gap in the lower half of the table, our place in the Bundesliga is not yet secure.” She expressed her delight at being entrusted with this challenging task and emphasized the importance of unity within the team.

Union director of men’s football, Horst Heldt, commented on the decision: “We have had a hugely disappointing second half of the season so far and will not allow ourselves to be blinded by our league position.” He highlighted the need for urgent points to secure their place in the league. The recent performances have not given the club confidence in the current setup, leading to the decision to make a fresh start.

Heldt also mentioned that Eta will take on the role on an interim basis before becoming the head coach of the women’s professional team in the summer as planned.

A Legacy of Pioneers

Marie-Louise Eta’s appointment follows in the footsteps of other trailblazing women in football. Carolina Morace became the first woman to manage a men’s professional team in Europe when she took charge of Italian third division side Viterbese in 1999. In July 2023, Forest Green appointed Hannah Dingley as caretaker boss, although she did not take charge of a competitive fixture.

These milestones reflect the gradual progress towards gender equality in football coaching roles. While challenges remain, the increasing presence of women in leadership positions is a positive step forward for the sport.

The Future of Union Berlin

With Eta at the helm, Union Berlin faces a crucial period in their season. The team’s performance over the next few months will determine their fate in the Bundesliga. Eta’s leadership and strategic approach are expected to bring much-needed stability and direction to the squad.

The club’s management has shown confidence in Eta’s abilities, and her background in both men’s and women’s football provides a unique perspective. As she takes on this new role, the focus will be on improving results and securing a safe position in the league.

The journey ahead may be challenging, but with the right mindset and determination, Union Berlin has the potential to turn things around. Eta’s appointment is not just a historic moment for the club but also a significant step towards a more inclusive and diverse football landscape.
