Harrison Ford’s Journey from Depression to Hollywood Icon
Harrison Ford, now 83, has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema. His name is synonymous with legendary roles such as Indiana Jones and Han Solo, but his journey to stardom was anything but straightforward.
Ford’s early years were marked by a struggle to find his place in the world. He worked part-time as a carpenter to support his family while pursuing his passion for acting. It was during his college years that he discovered the transformative power of acting. “I would get up out of my single bed, go to a phone, order a pizza, go back and lay down in bed until the pizza came. I would eat the pizza, throw the wrappers in the corner, go back to sleep,” he recalled on The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast Awards Chatter. “I had a single room and I had classes to go to, but I rarely ventured out… I was more than depressed. I think I was ill.”
It was through acting classes that Ford found a new purpose. “The acting students were doing something that I hadn’t really understood, and they were telling stories about life and life, and some of them were exceptional in their capacity to understand human behavior. And so I think I simply found my place amongst storytellers. It really changed my world, changed my life.”
Ford has been a staple in Hollywood since 1964. His breakthrough came with George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973), which put him on the casting radar. Over the decades, he has built a career that spans seven decades, earning numerous accolades along the way.
In 2026, Harrison Ford received the prestigious SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards. This honor recognized his decades-long career as an actor in some of the industry’s most iconic movies and his humanitarian efforts. He was the 61st recipient of the union’s highest award.
“I am deeply honoured to be chosen as this year’s recipient of the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award,” Ford said in a statement. “To be acknowledged by my fellow actors means a great deal to me. I’ve spent most of my life on film sets, working alongside incredible actors and crews, and I’ve always felt grateful to be part of this community.”
Other notable recipients of this award include Betty White, Jane Fonda, Sidney Poitier, Elizabeth Taylor, James Earl Jones, Mary Tyler Moore, and Robert de Niro.
This isn’t the only lifetime achievement award Harrison has earned in his career. He has also won the 2024 Critics’ Choice Career Achievement Award, the 2002 Golden Globes Cecil B. DeMille Award, and the 2000 AFI Life Achievement Award. Additionally, he has received an Honorary César, an Honorary Palme d’Or, and was honored as a Disney Legend in 2024.
