Grand Island, Nebraska, recently welcomed the return of the Global Roots Festival, a vibrant celebration that brought together residents and visitors to experience the rich tapestry of cultures from around the world. The festival offered a unique opportunity for attendees to immerse themselves in music, cultural performances, and international cuisine, creating an atmosphere of unity and discovery.
“Our idea is to really showcase all the different cultures here,” said Laura Gamboa Urrego, the organizer of the Global Roots Festival. “Right now, most people don’t even know how diverse Grand Island is. So, we just really want to focus on that.”
Gamboa Urrego, who was born in Colombia, shared her personal connection to the event. She explained that during her childhood in the area, she didn’t see much of her culture represented. “I’m Hispanic. But like, each country is different,” she said, emphasizing the importance of highlighting the diversity within the community.
The festival featured a variety of performances, including those by the Asian Culture and Community Center of Lincoln Lan Dance and Martial Arts Team. Their performance captivated audiences with its traditional elements and storytelling.
“We really love coming out to all these different events and performing for everyone because it’s a chance for everyone to see a part of the Asian culture that’s not available every single day,” said Ray Petersen, director of the team. “The two performers inside the costume coordinate to make one animal. And it really becomes like magic.”
Another highlight of the festival was the presence of Richie, a local resident who shared traditional games at the event. His enthusiasm for the activities was infectious, as he explained the significance of the games and their role in his childhood.
“It’s just, you know, the curiosity that everybody has and just like the excitement that I have to explain it,” he said. “About like just how I used to use it as a kid, how I used to play it as a kid. It’s just the excitement of just sharing, you know, and then learning.”
The Global Roots Festival not only provided entertainment but also served as a platform for cultural exchange and education. Attendees left with a deeper appreciation for the diverse backgrounds that contribute to the community’s identity.
Through music, dance, and food, the festival highlighted the importance of embracing and celebrating differences. It encouraged dialogue and understanding among participants, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity.
In addition to the performances and games, the festival also included interactive exhibits and workshops where attendees could learn more about various cultures. These activities allowed for hands-on experiences that made the learning process engaging and memorable.
The event was a testament to the power of community and the value of cultural representation. By bringing people together, the Global Roots Festival created a space where individuals could connect, share, and grow.
As the festival concluded, organizers expressed their hope that such events would continue to be a regular part of life in Grand Island. They believe that by promoting cultural awareness and appreciation, the community can become more united and enriched.
Overall, the Global Roots Festival was a successful celebration of diversity and a reminder of the beauty that comes from embracing different traditions and perspectives. It left a lasting impact on all who attended, inspiring them to seek out and appreciate the richness of global cultures.
