Brad Mortensen, one of the new owners, shared how the community has embraced their efforts so far. “People are excited to come back into the building and share their stories,” he said. The Mortensens, who purchased the schoolhouse, plan to repurpose it as both a wedding venue and a community center.

Lori Mortensen emphasized the importance of preserving the building’s history, noting that various memorabilia still remain within its walls. “There are people who have stories about their grandparents or events they experienced here, like playing on the witch hat in the yard or graduating from this place,” she said.
The couple wants to transform the entire building, creating spaces for socializing, live music, and other community events. They also hope to maintain areas like the basketball court, which hold special significance for many.
Brad Mortensen described the renovation as more than just a business venture—it’s a way to give back to the community. “Knowing its history gives us an appreciation for the gift we’ve been given,” he explained. “It’s not just ours, even though our names are on the title. It’s seen by the community as part of their history.”

Lori Mortensen shared how the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. “Hundreds of people have commented on it, and they’re really excited about what we’re doing,” she said. “They’re thanking us for taking care of this place.”
