Hong Kong’s Cinema Day Achieves Record Attendance Despite Slight Drop in Occupancy Rates

Hong Kong’s Cinema Day has once again proven to be a significant event for the city’s film industry, drawing a record-breaking 201,000 film-goers. This figure highlights the growing popularity of the annual event, which was initiated after the global pandemic to support the recovery of the cinema sector. Despite a minor decrease in overall occupancy rates compared to the previous year, the numbers still reflect a strong public interest in attending movie screenings.

The Hong Kong Theatres Association, which is responsible for organizing the event, announced these figures on Sunday. The association highlighted that 52 cinemas participated in the event by offering tickets at an affordable price of HK$30 (US$3.83) for 1,694 screenings. According to a post on the event’s social media page, this initiative marked a new high, with 201,000 admissions and an average occupancy rate of 81 per cent.

The attendance saw a 3.2 per cent increase from the 2025 event, where 194,755 people attended. However, the overall occupancy rate dipped by two percentage points from the 83 per cent recorded in the previous year. Despite this slight decline, the event continues to attract a diverse audience, including families, the elderly, and young people. Cinemas were filled with a vibrant atmosphere, indicating a renewed enthusiasm for cinema-going.

In addition to the movie screenings, shopping centres, restaurants, and retail outlets also launched promotional activities as part of this year’s event. Over the past three years, Cinema Day has resulted in more than 600,000 admissions and generated over HK$44 million in box office revenue, according to the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau. The government’s Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency supports the event by subsidizing the tickets through the Film Development Fund. This financial backing underscores the importance of the event in fostering a sustainable cinema culture and supporting the long-term development of Hong Kong’s film industry.
