Panic Over Abducted Redeemed, CAC Pastors, and Families

Abduction of Clerics Sparks Panic in Kogi State

A wave of panic has swept through religious communities in Kogi State following the reported abduction of several clerics and their families by armed gunmen. The incident, which occurred in the Odo-Eri community within the Yagba West Local Government Area, has raised serious concerns about the safety of religious leaders and their followers.

According to reports, the attackers, estimated to be around 30 in number, stormed the community at approximately 10 p.m. on Wednesday. They were seen riding motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately to instill fear among the residents. After causing chaos, the gang proceeded to abduct a number of clerics, along with their wives, children, and other members of the community.

While the exact number of victims remains unconfirmed, a reliable source informed that no fewer than 20 individuals were taken from the area. The assailants reportedly fled via Abewo Road towards Kwara State, leaving behind a trail of fear and uncertainty.

Police Response and Lack of Communication

Despite the gravity of the situation, there has been little communication from the affected church leadership. Efforts by correspondents to reach out to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Afusat Saliu, proved unsuccessful as she was not reachable. However, earlier statements from Saliu confirmed the incident to TVC News. She mentioned that security operatives had been deployed in the area, with ongoing efforts to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.

The lack of immediate response from the church authorities has left many questioning the preparedness of religious institutions in dealing with such threats. The Redeemed Christian Church of God, for instance, declined to comment when contacted by Sunday PUNCH. A senior official, who claimed not to be aware of the incident, stated that he had escalated the matter to the relevant authorities.

Security Measures and Warnings

In response to the incident, the Department of State Services (DSS) issued a security alert, prompting precautionary measures across churches in various parts of the state. Apostle Olaniyan Adebayo, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kogi State, confirmed that the DSS had contacted him and asked him to inform churches in the affected areas based on an intelligence report.

Adebayo explained, “We alerted all the churches on Wednesday and Thursday concerning it. We sent messages to those churches through their coordinators in the local government.” He emphasized that the early warning helped ensure that some church leaders and members were aware of the situation and took necessary precautions.

Ongoing Investigations and Concerns

As the search for the abducted individuals continues, concerns remain about the safety of religious leaders and their families. The incident highlights the growing threat of violence against religious figures in the region. With no clear information on the whereabouts of the victims, the community is left in a state of anxiety.

The police have reiterated their commitment to resolving the case and bringing the perpetrators to justice. However, the lack of updates from the affected churches raises questions about the coordination between law enforcement and religious institutions.

Conclusion

The abduction of clerics and their families in Odo-Eri underscores the urgent need for stronger security measures and better communication between religious organizations and authorities. As the situation unfolds, the community awaits further developments and reassurance that the victims will be safely returned.
