He noted that early footage indicates the dolphin is in good health and behaving normally. “We’ve seen some footage and agree that it is an adult bottlenose dolphin in very good condition by the looks and behaving normally so I’d be more inclined to think that it’s possibly followed some prey into the river,” he said.
Mr. Donnelly also pointed out that recent tidal conditions might explain the rare urban appearance. “We’ve had some rather large tides of late which may push the salt water further up the river than normal so perhaps that’s one explanation of why this dolphin’s here. But also, these animals do venture up the river from time to time particularly during the winter months.”
The expert added that the visit was unlikely to indicate any issues with the river’s health. The dolphin has been spotted near the Hoddle Bridge and around Herring Island, drawing crowds eager to catch a glimpse of the rare city sight.
According to data from the institute, Port Phillip Bay supports more than 120 bottlenose dolphins and over 30 common dolphins. Some of these animals occasionally explore upstream waterways, making encounters like this not entirely unheard of, though still quite rare.
Authorities are reminding the public to admire the animal from a distance. Guidelines advise people not to deliberately approach dolphins within:
- 100 metres in boats
- 300 metres on jetskis
- 30 metres for swimmers and paddlers
