Pauline Hanson Urges Albanese on ISIS Brides’ Return

Australian Politicians Debate the Return of ISIS-Linked Citizens

The issue of Australian citizens linked to Islamic State (ISIS) attempting to return to the country has sparked a heated debate among politicians and the public. One Nation leader, Pauline Hanson, has taken a strong stance on the matter, calling for the group to be barred from re-entering Australia.

The Group in Question

A total of four women and nine children, all Australian citizens, are currently in Syria and preparing to leave. They have secured Australian passports and airline tickets, but their journey back to Australia is not straightforward. They are expected to undergo intensive security checks in Damascus, which could take several days.

Hanson has described these individuals as “terrorists” and has insisted they should never be allowed back into the country. Her comments come after Penny Wong, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, confirmed that any returnees could face arrest and imprisonment for traveling to a declared conflict zone.

Government’s Position

The Australian government has stated that it is legally required to issue passports to the group, but warned that they would face “the full force of the law” if evidence of criminal conduct is found. Wong emphasized during a press conference in Adelaide that the government is not facilitating their return.

“These are Australian citizens and the government is not assisting them to return,” she said. If they do return, they will face the full force of the law.

Calls for Stricter Measures

Senator Pauline Hanson has repeatedly argued that the women should remain in Syria. In March, she claimed that correctional officers had informed her that a 50-bed wing at Dillwynia Women’s Correctional Centre was being prepared to house returning Australian women linked to ISIS. This claim was later denied by Anoulack Chanthivong, who explained that the upgrade works were part of broader, budget-funded security enhancements.

Despite the denial, Hanson accused Labor governments of concealing the truth from Australians. She criticized the government for not being honest with the public and for failing to keep the community safe from radical Islamic terror and antisemitic extremism.

Hanson believes these women should be left in Syria. “They freely chose to break our laws and travel to the Middle East and join in the depraved barbarity that was the hallmark of the so-called Islamic State ‘caliphate’. Australians don’t want them back.”

Criticism of the Albanese Government

James Paterson, a senator from the Liberal Party, has rejected the government’s claim that it is not assisting the group. He pointed out that the government has issued them with Australian passports.

Speaking to Sky News Australia, Paterson said the Albanese Government is actively facilitating the group’s return despite having the legal power to prevent it. “My view is that if you leave a prosperous, safe and harmonious liberal democracy to join an Islamist death cult and a listed terrorist organisation, you have effectively repudiated your loyalty to Australia,” he said.

Paterson argued that the government has clear authority under the Passports Act to cancel or refuse travel documents but has chosen not to use it. “Under the former Coalition government, foreign ministers routinely refused and cancelled passports for ISIS fighters or suspected ISIS fighters, whether they were trying to leave Australia to join ISIS or attempting to return after having joined.”

He also highlighted the availability of temporary exclusion orders, which allow authorities to lawfully keep individuals offshore while terrorism investigations are conducted. “Only one of those orders has been used by the Albanese government, and as far as we know, none of the passports have been refused or cancelled.”

Paterson called on the government to explain its actions. “They have to explain why they are seeking to facilitate these people returning to our country.”
