A Wholesome Escape to the Hunter Valley
If you’re looking for a break that combines relaxation, luxury, and a touch of rustic charm, the Hunter Valley is the perfect destination. It’s a place where time slows down, and every moment feels like a scene from a Nancy Meyers movie. I recently had the chance to experience this magical region with my best friend, and it was exactly what I needed — a peaceful, wholesome escape that left me feeling rejuvenated.
Where We Stayed in the Hunter Valley
Our base for the weekend was The Carriages in Pokolbin, and it exceeded all expectations. The Verandah Room we stayed in opened out onto a private porch with a table, perfect for lazy mornings or an afternoon glass of wine. Inside, the room was cozy and filled with farmhouse charm, featuring a plush bed, a fireplace, a lounge, and a TV. Every detail was thoughtfully designed to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Each morning, a breakfast hamper arrived at our door, filled with fresh fruit, yoghurt, granola, croissants, and orange juice. This small but meaningful gesture made our stay even more enjoyable. The property itself offered plenty of amenities, including a pool, a tennis court, and spaces for picnics in the vineyards or by the dam. It was the kind of place that made me want to stay forever — especially during winter for the fireplace.

My Top Pick for Wine Tasting in the Hunter Valley
While I’m not a big drinker, I do enjoy a good glass of wine. Our stay at The Carriages was just a 10-minute walk from Pepper Tree Wines, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed tasting. The grounds were beautiful, with farmhouse-style buildings and gardens that created the ideal setting for sipping vino.
Inside, we had a Single Vineyard Tasting that included seven wines, from sparkling to deep reds. Our host, Ricky, guided us through each one, sharing the history and science behind the bottles. It was a pleasant and unhurried experience that allowed us to fully appreciate each sip.
For those interested in exploring more wineries, there are several options in the area, including Tyrrell’s Wines, Audrey Wilkinson, Bimbadgen Estate, and McGuigan Wines. Each offers its own unique experience, and you’re truly spoiled for choice in the Hunter Valley.

Where We Ate in the Hunter Valley
One of the highlights of our trip was dining at Circa 1876, a restaurant with a rustic, elegant vibe. The front room featured regal-like furniture and dim lighting, setting the tone for a memorable evening. For dinner, we opted for the set menu, which began with fresh bread and butter, followed by a delicious beef tartare. The main course was a juicy strip loin that melted in my mouth, and we ended the meal with an indulgent crème brûlée and chocolate pavé.

We also visited Amanda’s on the Edge for lunch, which offered a peaceful view of the vineyards. The menu included a set menu with a bottle of wine to share, making it a great value option. Highlights included the ricotta and basil gnocchi and the duck with miso peach glaze. The food was flavorful and well-prepared, and I can’t wait to return to try more dishes.
