India dominates Chinese Taipei 3-0 to reach Thomas Cup semis

India’s Men’s Badminton Team Advances to Thomas Cup Semifinals

India’s men’s badminton team has taken a significant step towards another Thomas Cup final after securing a 3-0 victory over Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals. The match, held in Horsens, Denmark, on Friday, showcased the team’s resilience and skill, as they combined strong performances in singles with authoritative displays in doubles.

This win marks only the second time in the tournament’s history that India has reached the semi-finals. With this result, the team is guaranteed at least a bronze medal. More importantly, it keeps alive their hopes of repeating their historic title-winning performance from 2022.

Lakshya Sen Sets the Tone with a Comeback Victory

The first singles match was a thrilling encounter between world No. 11 Lakshya Sen and world No. 6 Chou Tien-chen. Sen faced a tough challenge, losing the first game after a late lead slipped away. However, he showed remarkable determination, making a strong comeback to win the next two games with scores of 22-20 and 21-17 in a 90-minute battle.

Sen was in trouble during the second game when Chou led 17-13. He managed to save two match points, forcing the match into a third game. In the decider, Sen displayed sharper movement and cleaner attacking play, ultimately securing the victory.

This win was Sen’s fifth against Chou in their nine career meetings and gave India an early 1-0 lead in the tie.

Satwik-Chirag Hold Their Nerve as Ayush Seals Historic Night for India

India’s top doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, delivered a crucial performance in the second match. The world No. 4 pair faced a tense battle against Wang Chi-lin and Chiu Hsiang-chieh, eventually winning 23-21, 19-21, and 21-12 in a 75-minute match.

Both pairs exchanged quick rallies and momentum swings throughout the first two games. However, Satwik and Chirag improved their performance in the decider, pulling away comfortably. This victory extended their head-to-head record against the Chinese Taipei pair to 3-0.

Ayush Shetty Completes the Sweep

The final match of the day saw debutant Ayush Shetty take on world No. 8 Lin Chun-Yi. Shetty secured a clean sweep with a straight-games victory of 21-16 and 21-17 in 48 minutes.

Lin entered the match in good form, having won the India Open and the All England Open earlier in the season. However, Shetty remained composed from the start, controlling the rallies and limiting his opponent’s chances to settle down.

Looking Ahead to the Semifinals

With this impressive 3-0 victory, India will now face either Japan or France in the semifinals on Saturday. The team’s strong performance in the quarterfinals has set the stage for what promises to be an exciting continuation of their journey in the Thomas Cup.

Meanwhile, India’s women’s team, led by PV Sindhu, did not advance past the Uber Cup group stage against China. Despite their efforts, they were unable to secure a spot in the next round.

As the competition continues, fans are eagerly anticipating what the Indian team can achieve in the upcoming matches.
