‘Numb’: Carey’s Heartbreaking Truth 22 Years After Injury

Wayne Carey’s Ongoing Battle with Injuries

Wayne Carey, a legendary figure in Australian Football League (AFL) history, has recently opened up about his ongoing health struggles. The former Adelaide Crows player, known for his remarkable career, is now facing significant challenges due to a neck injury that ended his playing days in 2004. Carey has confirmed that he will definitely undergo surgery at some point to address the persistent issues he continues to experience.

The injury, which involved a cervical spine issue, was a major setback for Carey. At the time, he was warned of the risks, including the possibility of paralysis if he continued to play. Despite this warning, Carey’s dedication to the sport led him to push through, but the long-term consequences have been severe.

Carey recently shared details about his current condition on the You Cannot Be Serious podcast. He described experiencing shooting pains and a lack of feeling in his hands, which has significantly impacted his daily life. “My left hand is basically numb, right hand going numb, I’m getting shooting pains, all that sort of stuff,” he explained.

He also mentioned falling over a couple of times in recent weeks, initially attributing it to aging. However, after two days of concern, he sought medical attention from a neurosurgeon. The results from an MRI were not encouraging, revealing that the situation had deteriorated over the years. “The last MRI I had on my neck was about 15 years ago, and it was pretty bad,” Carey said.

Throughout his career, Carey played 272 AFL games, most notably for North Melbourne, where he captained the team to premierships in 1996 and 1999. Now 54 years old, he has undergone various surgeries, including shoulder surgery in 2022. Despite these procedures, he still faces significant challenges, including severe arthritis in multiple parts of his body.

Carey hopes that the latest round of surgery will help restore some of the feeling in his hands. “My strength and range of movement is gone… numerous other parts of my body are severely arthritic,” he admitted. He is determined to take action, stating, “I will definitely need an operation.”

In 2022, Carey’s lawyer revealed that the former key forward relies on anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications to manage his injuries from his playing days. The lawyer also mentioned that Carey needed a shoulder replacement and three discs replaced in his neck. This information came to light following an incident at a casino in Perth, where Carey was ejected for possessing a bag containing white powder.
